Launch ramps are for LAUNCHING boats!

When I go to a public boat landing I know that I am smarter and more competent than everybody. My neighbor knows so much about boats I am afraid he’s going to go postal one day at the landing.

Ya gnaw wha I’m sayin?

The best of the worst has got to be the kayakers…back the truck down the ramp, put the kayak(s) on the ramp, unload enough stuff to fill a sportfisher, start tying on the stuff, realize they have to much stuff, put some stuff back in the truck, go park the truck and THEN give their buddy/wife/child/etc instructions on how to paddle said kayak in the middle of the ramp…

Then they finally launch and cuss you out because their buddy/wife/child/etc does not know how to paddle and ran into your boat and you are laughing your ass off.

Before any kayakers go postal on me, I have one myself but launch quickly and give directions in the surf or somewhere other then the ramp.

And I did not mention the groups that let the children roam around all of the ramps as others back in…blow the horn as a warning and here comes the cuss out again.

Trying not to go postal on you here, but this thread is approaching the infamous second page, and most every post is full of stories (multiple often) of people being screwed over by boats, not yaks.

I too have a boat and multiple kayaks. I am not too bad with the boat, and I carry my yak down the side of the launch out of the way. I have had boats come in and out while my yak is off to the side with no problem.

It’s not a problem of type of boat, it is the user, experience, and sometimes alcohol level.

I like to fish boat ramps when I have a spare hour, and always give those launching or retrieving the right of way. I’ll fish from the dock if it is clear. But the kicker one day, was a whole family at the end of the dock, complete with the playpen!

One thing to keep in mind when returning to the ramp is the number of “booze-fueled” folks who could care less about you or any other boater. Be patient and avoid confrontations with people who’s judgement may be significantly impaired. Save that “Barley Pop” for the freshwater washdown in the drive way.

thats beautiful!

Educating people at the boat ramps ,good idea;but how about a little education for those who have NEVER owned a boat or operated one. These are the ones that are definitly scary.I like most folks try to be courteous and help them out.but as you all know there are some folks who know absolutly everything!!They are screaming the kids are crying and the other people just want to either crawl under a rock or just go home.I must say I have been at the ramp and been held up by seasoned boaters as well, they act like I’ve been fishing or boating here for years ,so I have the priveledge to block the ramp until I strap eveything down ,load my rods diffrently jcheck my fuel level ectt…to me its not worth SMACKING THE HORNETS nest and get them started. It is frustrating to me but I would rather end up enjoying my day than in a pissing contest, with some one that ignorant.

If it’s that much of an issue for you get a jet dock at a marina… The problem ain’t going anywhere. You are the pro tell the trailor folks how its done???

Actually after reading this your just a tight wadded biotch. If you are off your day job whats the rush? get off your ass and help the less experienced instead of *****ing online about it. How else are they going to learn. DNR is spread to thin to deal with this issue it’s up to experts like you to help the less experienced. Maybe even could call it Southern Hospitality… You act like you were born into a boat ramp pro.

Thats right quit whinning about it and do something about it.

I ran out of gas on the shem creek ramp one time. A kayaker in his Pathfinder towed me out to level ground. Hurray for that kayaker.

One thing that irritates me is while in the make-ready lane, in the middle of the line somewhere, when making ready, and the person in front of you moves up in line, but you are still making ready, the iceholes behind you start honking, as if they are going to be able to launch any quicker if I pull up 20 more feet.

Hold the tomato, fool!

By the way, even seasoned pros screw up at boat ramps.

That's why you have a plan, boat is almost ready when we leave the house. Finishing touches in the ready area, quickly. Wife backs the truck on down & I'm in the boat driving & disconnecting.

We get completely ready before arrival at the landing. At the landing we have to do three things.

  1. Remove tie strap
  2. Unhook winch
  3. Unhook chain under winch

Done…launch. Have to pick up the driver and passengers, but that means loitering offsight until everyone is on the dock, pulling in, picking up, and off immediately.

Of course, if I am alone I have to tie up at the dock and park the truck. I literally jog back to the boat to get her out of the way.

JimIslander for ramp teacher of the year! Well said. Just imagine how frustrating it is towing a boat to a busy ramp. If all would follow the previous posts’ protocol it would make everyone’s life little easier.

4. Check plug

If you ain't hooked, you ain't doing it right.

THAT is something to do before leaving the house (with the printed checklist), but couldn’t hurt while unhooking the strap! :sunglasses:

I’ve always thought it would be nice if there were signs giving “instructions” or “reminders” (similar to that of JimIslander) as to the purpose of the boat ramp. Probably wouldn’t be very expensive either in terms of state money.

GREAT idea. A few large signs in the appropriate locations would help, and cost very little.

sign thing is a good idea but just think it would take em even longer to get out of the truck to read it:smiley:
