Lazy Redfish=Skunk

Took time off work today to put in a little time on the river. I was able to locate several small schools in the usual areas along the Ashley. I fish the Ashley pretty regular due soley to convienince. No matter what fly or plastic was thrown they weren’t having it. This has happened to me on a regular basis lately on the Ashley, only to come home check the sight and see plenty reports of success in other areas. I"m new to the fly rod but surprisingly I’ve been somewhat successful. the few fish I’ve managed to fool have been feeding along the bank. The ones I’m having trouble with are the ones soaking up the sun with not a care in the world. I guess where I’m going with all of this is, how much of a difference is there in the fish I’ve mentioned and the fish along the more popular fishing areas ( Wando, ICW, IOP etc…) I have the mind set of its not where you fish but how you fish, but I’m obviously having trouble with both. Ive decided to start doing some exploring so any help with the Wando or previously mentioned areas would be great. I know a guide might be my best bet so i asked the wife to look into that for Christmas, maybe it’ll work out. How do you guys pick off 10+ redfish a day when they’re just not that active. I have no problem admitting my ignorance and asking for advice. Last thing, I do get out quite a bit for a working man. I feel I pay my dues and research and try different approaches as much as I can, sometimes it just gets frustrating and sometimes you just gotta ask for help.

Thanks

Nothing wrong with sharing experiences, that’s what forums are about. Everyone gets skunked every now and then.

I’ve been on several schools this winter that simply wouldn’t eat. You could’ve thrown a cast net and it would’ve been full. I was working a school once this winter and no luck, must’ve been an hour of throwing everything I had, then spotted another school less than 30 yards away blowing up the surface eating some bait. I threw the same grub at this school that the previous wouldn’t eat, and bam fish after fish after fish. Same tide, same bait, same general area. Look for signs of life other than fish, such as bait, birds, stingrays, or signs of the fish eating. When they’re hungry and eating they will almost eat anything.
