lead core

if yall read my report in the other topic this is why i am asking i have looked at leadcore in the stores and stuff but never though i could ever find a reason to have it but my question is can you really troll 50’ depht using leadcore line and say a stretch or u rig fill me in

this was covered pretty thoroughly in a thread in this forum a few months ago. as I recall, someone had a formula for determinig depth to speed to number of colors. search and you will find, grasshopper. if you find it, how about bumping it back up for those of us who are just too dang lazy to go digging for it. thanx. later.

I’m not as lazy as I look. this is what I was reffering to:

but, I don’t think that is what you were looking for. I did hear a report of fish being caught at “nine colors”

I have run 10-12 colors but a “leadcore expert” told me that 40-45’ deep was about all you could get out of leadcore line. .

Most of the time I have anywhere from 5-10 colors out

Murraymaker, if you are looking to do some deep water trolling I’d suggest thinking about downriggers before lead core. I use them all summer long and prefer them much more than fishing lead core. Of coarse the initial investment will be more, but you would have them for many years and they take a lot of the guess work out of figuring out what depth your baits are at and you don’t have to crank in the fish for 100 yards. Also keep in mind your not going to get 100 yards of lead core line on a typical baitcasting reel like a 6500C, so unless you have a couple of larger reels you own to dedicate to lead core you would have to get some.

He is correct, I have 1 downrigger and I would like to add another but have not got around to it.

With the LC you have to use much larger reels. I actually have used a couple of my Shimano TLD 15’s and they will only hold about 150 yards of LC line.

I have also used Penn 320 GTI’s and again they will only hold about 100-150 yards of LC and sometimes that is not enough.

With the downriggers you can use you regular live bait set ups and have a great battle on your hand, with the LC setups you sometimes wonder if you have a fish on all the way to the boat
