i asked about dumbbell eye molds on another thread and got a couple links that had every shape but that. does anybody know if the hourglasses are poured or are they turned from rods like the brass ones. i use a fair number and havent been able to locate bulk bags so i mostly use brass. probably better for me anyway. dont know that i want to pour them myself but my sinker man was interested when i told about the markups.
thanks

Spirit River has some bulk stuff but most retail stores won’t or don’t carry it. You can also buy a blank mold from Do It Molds if you know anyone in the C & C Business that will Design and Cut the mold for you. Typically the smaller stuff has more detail so it’s more expensive to design and cut than the larger stuff.
Your other option would be to get Do It to cut the mold however you would have to agree to buy several dozen molds of this same type which would most likely be cost prohihbitive unless you can get several folks committed to pre paying for a mold or two. If you go for it please let me know, I’d be willing to take a couple off your hands.
As for the molds design, you could go with a double or downward sloaping pie design that would have several different size per port. You would also want to make sure that it was vented extremely well.
Lastly, if you have Do It cut the mold make sure that you go with the Pro Model which is much more precise than their standard models. You really need it for the smaller applications.
Actually a retired mold salesman stopped in the store saturday arranging for me and uncle josh to talk at his fishing club. he mentioned his trade to the machinist that hangs around the store and i asked his opinion. i showed him the clouser head on a couple of my flies and from the markings he is fairly certain that they were turned on a lathe from rods. i can see how that would be a lot quicker with pieces that small. that explains why none of the mold companies have them even with dozens of other designs. it could be done on a small scale but a lathe that would cut several simultaneously would be the way to go. i know that is how the brass ones are cut. it may not even be the same lead that is used for most sinkers. it may even be alloyed to give it better characteristics.
i could almost hear the twilight zone music when he said he was a mold salesman as i had just posted the day before.
i really should hook up with hareline or one of the big houses so i can sell tying stuff in the store. im sure they bulk the heads.
