Leader length on planers?

How much leader should be used on a planer when trolling a drone for kings? I’m planning on trolling around between the shipping channel and the nearshore on Saturday and am curious as to what everyone’s opinion is.

Thanks,

Inept

I usually use no more than 5 feet of leader and it has worked very well for me.

Around 25 to 30 feet of 80lb is about right

Inept Angler, I use 80 to 130 mono leader. 50ft. is what I have on my leader. A number 4 planner and a hot pink and yellow reflect tape drone spoon. The more leader you have off the planner the larger the orbit will be for your spoon. As you pull the spoon it will orbit in a circle and spin the more water colum you will cover. The less leader the tighter your orbit will be. Hope you understand the concept. Good luck.

I understand the concept, but 50 feet? I’m guessing you are not using a trip planer. Are you pulling your planer off of the rear cleat? I’ve always used around 5-6 feet of leader and used a #2 sea striker planer. I will double the line for 20 feet ahead of the planer.

The length is around 40ft. I use a cannon downrigger and a salty braced #4 planner. Yes it is a trip planner. I got this info from a commercial fisherman. It really works well.

use a smaller planer than a #4. just enough to get it down. 10ft leader with a wire trace. I use a small enough planer to pull it on a live bait rod.
