Leader Material

Wondering why flouro leader is so expensive -25 or 50 yds. of 20lb for $15 or so. I’ve been using flouro line (not leader) as leader material lately -200yard/20 lb. spool for the same price. Is there any reason this is a bad idea? I can’t find a problem or difference in knot strength, abrasion resistance, etc but the price difference is sooo big between flouro leader and flouro line that I think I must be missing something. It still has to be better (more invisible) than mono which worked just fine before we discovered flouro. Any thoughts?

I use flouro line as a leader as well but the reason for the price is in the manufacturing process for a leader. Flouro line is one single structure. The flouro leader contains multiple resins that will be stronger over a shorter distance, same with tippet. The leader usually has 2 different molten resins. The harder inside resin helps tensile strength. Softer outside resin creates greater knot Strength. Leaders and Tippets are more difficult to produce and therefore more $$ b/c of multiple resins used. It will be stronger but in my opinion only worth it if you’ve had a problem with leader strength. If not just keep doin’ what you’re doin’.

I have been using Yozuri hybrid flourocarbon. It has worked really well for me and is not very expensive.
