Leader/Tippet

When tippet is getting too short, should I just buy new, or is it just as effective to tie eather floro/mono to the remaining tippet a couple times? If so, what is a good #test leader to use and a proper line to line knot. Thanks

I use mono 12-14 lb, line to leader, efficent last year at least for me … depending on what you’re fishing for

I always buy the redfish leader then match the spools of tippet to the tippet on the ready made leader. Just tie enough on to buy me an extra couple days on the leader. I was tought by a freshwater WV flyfisher and thats how they do it at least. Would like to get into tying my own leader but i am to lazy to look into it lol. So easy to buy it already made up at Bass Pro.

Yep. Keep your life simple. That's why I fly fish.

Here is what I do. Saltwater Red (or Trout) tapered leader. Meaning something like a a 12 to 20 lb. store bought tapered leader. Then I tie whatever tippet I need to to match the conditions I plan to fish. Clear deep water gets a 16 lb. tippet and grass and oysters get 20 to 30 lb. tippet.

The knot? … Blood Knot!!!

i tie my own leader use 20lb test tie that to 16lb tie that to 12 tie that to 10 or tie it heavier if you need it then just like regular leader add tippet

Take your tapered leader that is getting to short and buy a spool of Flouro leader material, I always keep a spool of #12, #15 and #20 in my rig, and use that for your tippets. The mono will give you a good shock absorber and the flouro will protect against teeth (Yes redfish have a nasty set of top jaw teeth), gill plates and grass. Once I was gievn this tip I have landed many more fish than before…

Go to Lowcountry Fly shop or CA and buy a 9ft 20lb leader. Cut 2-3ft off tippet end, and put a small loop knot on end. Now you have a 7ft “butt”. Simply loop to loop a few feet of tippet (I usually use 20lb flouro) onto “butt”. This way it is quick and easy to change out an abraded, or windknotted tippet, without shortening your “butt” with every reknot. During spooky winter I will blood or surgeons knot a few more feet of 12lb flouro onto end of 20lb tippet. A store bought leader can last for months, barring casts over exposed oysters…Not, in any way, my design. Leftys.
