what length and lb test is everyone using for leaders when fishing for reds…i had tried just using some mono that was 30 lb test but it seemed to b to much and the fly didnt want to go…should i try smaller
Go to Hadrells or the Angler and have them set you up with a 9’ tapered leader in 16lb test. The tapered leader will help to turn the fly over, and the 16lb should be fine for most inshore reds.
Pillage and plunder with a 9wt and a fist full of clousers.
thanks
You can also buy the spools and save a bunch of money. start with 40lb then go to 25 and then 17. If you already have a tapered leader, you can use the top and just add 17lb tippet. This will last you a long time.
Some of the tapered leaders seem to break easy on the hook set.
Just my .02ct worth.

40-30-20 mono. I like maxima.
Half a rod’s length of 40, and then a quarter rod of 30, then 20.
I have had a lot of break offs in the grass with flouro and you don’t need it anyway.
I have had a different experience with leaders than grape. I get the prepackaged bonefish or redfish leader, snip off the last couple feet and add a flouro top shot. The mono takes a beating in the grass and eventually fails on the big boy. Adding the fluoro increased abrasion resistance. No broken off fish for me in two years since making the switch away from std mono leaders.
Grape…
Fluorocarbon doesn’t have the stretching qualities of Mono, therefore a leader entirely composed of it tends to break under strain or on hook sets due to the shock involved. But Fluoro is much tougher as far as abraision resistance goes, and doesn’t get nicked up as easily as mono by the grass or the reds themselves…
TRS has it right, using a leader thats mainly composed with Mono gives you the stretch you need to avoid busting a fish off, and using a fluoro tippet for the last 20" or so gives you a tough section that cant be nicked up and chewed through on a bigger fish…
Building leaders is good, but for someone just getting started I would just go with the prefab… just my .02…

For my .02 I like to use abrasion resistant 20 lb test leaders that are 7.5 feet then I add a 1.5-2 foot tippet of silver thread copolymer line as tippet. Adding the tippet really extends the life of the leader, and I have found that the silver thread can really take a beating. I like to set the hook and had some issues with flourocarbon tippet breaking on me.

I use kite string and braided wire… it just don’t break but seriously I use a pre-fab leader, knock off the last 3 feet and drop a flouro tippet on there… no problems so far and flies turn over…
