I have some leaks around the rivets. Outside of boat was just painted which temporarily fixed leaks. I was thinking of painting inside of boat and them silicone over rivets or JB weld over rivets then paint.
Think it will work or any better ideas?
Try this product,http://www.westmarine.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?productId=14974&catalogId=10001&langId=-1&storeId=11151&storeNum=10104&subdeptNum=10296&classNum=10297,I have used it on my 16 foot boat. What I did was get two hammers and tighten the rivets and cleaned and used G-Flex.
Don’t know the difference in cost but marine tex works good and very easy to use with minimal prep. Does anyone know the cost of having 15’ aluminum boat Line-Xed on the inside up to waterline?
You can’t catch fish on a dry line
This is something I did with my old jon boat years ago. I turned the boat upside down, wire brushed around the rivets, cleaned well with lacquer thinner(acetone would work also), and then put a quarter sized dab of 5200 marine sealant on all of the rivets. I smoothed out the 5200 and put a small piece of duct tape over it. That took care of the leaking for a good 2 1/2 - 3 years. The duct tape wore off after a while, but it was still leak free. Previously, I had tried JB Weld, but it hardens and then started cracking & breaking off. The 5200 stays flexible after it cures. Don’t use the fast cure marine sealant unless you’re going to do each rivet individually. It skins up and sets REALLY fast.
Hope this helps.

I tried marine tex and JB Weld and after a couple of months you start seeing some water. Happy Bob is correct about the 5200 working on rivets, but I had a good bit of rivets leaking and I used G-Flex and I haven’t had a problem since.
Sounds good. Thanks for all the help guys.
Another question?
I am thinking of replacing the floor with decking boards in stead of Plywood. They just would seam easier than plywood (all that notching out for the ribs & other stuff). The floor does not have much of a V so I am not worried that the floor would not be flat. Has anyone tried decking boards & if so did it work well?

Have you tried to “swell” the rivets yet?
One of my old jon boats had started leaking around a few of the rivets,so I set the boat on a pair of carpenters bucks, right side up, then had a friend hold a chunk of steel against the rivet head on the outside of the boat while I tapped the inside of the rivet with a ball-peen hammer. Most of the rivets sealed up. For the few that continued to leak, I replaced them and haven’t had any leaks since. That was probably 7-8 years ago.
You have to seal them with something flexible. Use 5200 or the best thing ever for this job is Gluv-it and West Marine has it.

All of those ideas are good. I have a 16ft tracker which i have hammered the rivets silicone inside and out and put 5200 on and eventually they will start to leak again. the best to do is drill the rivet out and relpace it with a stainless steel bolt and locknut with rubber washers. did that to my boat about a year ago and its still not leaking at all. good luck.

Pan head bolt w/ nut worked for me before. Use some sealant too for extra protection. Have also re-riveted w/ good results.
One type of rivet is actually a specialized pop-rivet, I believe called ‘mono-bolts’. They are used on planes, so local aviation mechanics will have them. When the mandrel beaks off, it leaves some mandrel inside the rivet to seal the center, therefore no leak.
When I replace a rivet, I use the OEM type rivet and put a dab of FORM-A-GASKET between the rivet and boat, then peen it tight.
Never had one to leak after that.
