Learning Experience

Well, todays trip to the upper Wando was frustrating to say the least. First, if you don’t know, the Wando landing behind the gas station off HWY 41 near the old bridge where Dentons used to be is not a public landing! So, while we were there at the perfect time, we couldn’t put in. So, my son and I decided to just head over to Duncans and fish in the Ashley for a while. We didn’t get in until around 7:15, the wind was howling and the sky was overcast but hey, we are yak fisherman right… so off we went. Found an area across from the landing that provided a little shelter from the wind and wasn’t a bad spot for fishing either… so we thought. Well, we caught a few trout and flounder that didn’t measure, some ladyfish and I caught a huge ray that showed its displeasure by breaking my 100 dollar Penn rod next to the boat as I was trying to release it! I hope it dies a slow painful death some day! The wind and fishing only got worse so we were out of the water by noon. Like I said, FRUSTRATING!

No offense, but I think you need an attitude adjustment. If you did a little research you could have avoided the first issue. You were on the water and had some success. A little less drag would have prevented the rod break. I count any time on the water as a time I’m thankful to experience and catching is just a bonus. Try to have some gratitude. You will be a happier person. IMO you had a good day

I’ll take your crappy day on the water any day. I cleaned the garage (partly anyway). I’m with Optiker. There have been several posts regarding that ramp not being public and stuff will happen. I can’t count the number of days I have spent on the water only to be skunked completley. Undersized fish or even a ladyfish would have been welcomed. Be thankful you had the opportunity to spend the day with your son.

Geez! tough crowd here! Im new to kayak fishing, new to the area and new to this forum but Im a quick learner so, I will keep my information to myself from now on and leave the posting to you pro’s! What a bunch of posers!

I have to agree with DF. Since 7/4 I have gotten 2 days on the water, due to weather and family illnesses and work. I have threatened to the wife to sell the boat just because I don’t want it sitting! It has been out 1 day and that day, I got caught in one the worst lightning storms I think that I have ever been in. When my hand on the throttle got shocked from lightning, I found the first dock that I could and got to shore! Then my ‘safe have’ was under a tree for 45 minutes! It was the best I could find.
But, I did get on the water and caught a few fish.
I can relate to the loss of a good rod though. However, gleen through the extra stuff, and like the earlier post said, less drag will help. Being in a yak, you also need to allow a little extra line to keep the rod out of the way as you land the fish.
Most of my rods have been broken by my son though - that can be frustrating, especially when he has only had it for an hour (brand new)!

If that offended you I have to ask: “what is it that you want?” You are not going to limit out every day on the water. I don’t care how good you are. You are not always going to have perfect conditions. Also stuff will go wrong I don’t care how prepared you are. Stuffs gonna break. You spent a day on the water with your son. What’s the problem? I just don’t get it.

I caught one whiting out on Folly. I got so angry I killed a plate of BBQ at Bessinger’s.

You’re not from Ohio, are you? Just kidding.

Joe’s ramp at Hwy 41 is a membership only ramp, but believe it or not, you were lucky to not have used it for kayaking…currents around that bend of the Wando can be challenging even for boats. Launching and landing a boat at that ramp at a full tide rush takes skill. Using his dock would make it easier to do on a kayak, but paddling against the current would have been brutal.

And maybe you got lucky that the stingray broke off before he slapped you with it’s barb. I’ve had 2 friends have to go the ER from getting hit by stingrays. They tell me it’s the worst pain they’ve ever felt. One said it was worse than getting stabbed by a red-hot poker and the other said it was worse than his heart attack.

Look up and find Paradise Island boat landing. Shem Creek is free, there is a kayak launch at Pitt Street Bridge that’s free. There’s a free launch at Gadsdenville Road. You can also launch for free at Garris Public landing.

FWIF, Optiker is one of the guys you could go to and ask advise and get a valuable opinion on these forums. He wasn’t back handing you at all.

No one was busting your chops, just trying to provide some perspective. If the above posts hurt your feelings then you’d better either grow thicker skin or find another site. As for being a bunch of posers. Me maybe but, you surely showed your ignorance because Optiker is one the absolute “go to” guys on this site (or any other) when it comes to fishing. You could actually learn a ton from him and many others on this site.

Guess I’m a poser too.

Come out to our club’s Meet and Greet…Bushy Park this Saturday at 0800. You’ll meet some of the local kayak anglers and maybe pick up a tip or two.

Kayak fishing can be a little difficult until you get your yak setup right for you, you also need to be a little more carful with things! Another tip I can give you is don’t bring expensive gear on a yak because it has a tendency to go overboard or get broken.
