Leeds 11/16

I took my “baby” brother fishing Saturday. We decided to try our luck on the river we grew up on, the Ashley. We headed south from the landing and hit up a few creeks I scouted on Google Earth.

We had some hits and misses in the creeks, but one creek in particular was trout city. Lots of them were 13 7/8" long, so we’ll be back there in a couple weeks to see if they’ve grown up yet. We were switching back and forth between artificials and live shrimp under corks. It has been a while since I’ve used live shrimp, and that was a lot of fun. We saw a lot of big, big white shrimp in the water, but I couldn’t find them in numbers with the cast net.

It was a fun day, and the highlight for me was catching a stingray and a trout on my double drop rig. I’ve caught two fish on one rig before, but never that combination. The short trout were pretty thick. They felt keeper size but measured up just short. It kind of messed with my “fish-size sense”…does that make sense? Anyway, I had a blast, and my brother did too. Checking out new spots and finding fish there is always rewarding.

Right when we were packing up to head back, some F/A-18’s flew over. That brought back some great memories, and my brother had to listen to some more of my stories about my Marine Corps days. I’m sure he’s tired of hearing those old stories, but he never complains.

Water temp was about 63 degrees everywhere. Water clarity was bad around points but was pre

I know what you mean Hoof. In the spring when you would catch a trout fat with eggs it was almost football shaped, and made it look smaller sometimes

Good job Hoof. I fished similar areas in the Ashley on Sunday. Could not buy a red, but found the trout willing as well. Caught a dozen or so on a glow DOA before heading back up river to the house. Stopped around the house and got a few bites in the rain, but they quickly got off. Got a look at one following the bait back and appeared to be a striper.

I saw them fly over several times too. I was wondering if they’re like “man look at all those people fishing…I wish I could be fishing” hahaha. I was able to lay into some trout for about 10 minutes on artificials and then bam it was gone. They nailed it though. I also got a bluefish maybe? It wouldn’t quit flopping.

I don’t care how good the fishing is.

If you asked me, “Do you want to go fishing or fly a fighter jet today?”, I would say fly the jet every time!

While I was still in I asked a lot of pilots if they ever woke up and didn’t want to go to work. They said if they were flying that day, the answer was always, “No.”
