I took my dad fishing today. It has been a long time since he fished the Ashley last, and it has been much longer than that since we fished it together. We headed north out of the landing and fished every tree and creek mouth we could find. We found a few spots that had enough fish stacked up to drop anchor and pick them off for 15-20 minutes, then it was back to drifting the bank with the trolling motor. We had a great time and caught tons of fish.
For some reason my dad couldn’t catch anything but trout, but he loves catching them and kept asking me, “Aren’t these fish beautiful?” Yes, they are, Dad. Yes, they are. I caught plenty of trout, redfish, stripers, and the biggest, meanest gar I’ve ever seen. All fish were released.
The hot color of the day was once again chartreuse, and it was en fuego! Most of the fish we found were up next to the grass. I think that had a lot to do with the tide stage we were fishing, right before and after high tide.
My dad measures them backwards, apparently. Must be an old-timer thing.
I guess that fish thought I was a little stinky, because he gave me a shower with his splashing when I let him go.
I saw you guys at the gas station that morning. Very jealous weekday fishing! Good job, nice boat.

Did you see that lady back up to the pump and cut me off? The only available diesel pump, and she cuts between me and it and backs up to in in her minivan. What a b----! That made me pretty mad, but catching fish made me forget about it.

Yeah, people are clueless on how difficult they can make it for others to pull a trailer…I grew up fishing the upper Ashley river, but haven’t been in a long time, I’ve been sticking with the folly and cooper river, but man looks like the Ashley still has potential…

I caught two in a row right there. They didn’t start biting until the water got moving out really quickly. By then my dad was ready to go home. I told him I wanted to stick around for another half hour so he could catch one. He said he was ready to go, so we left.
We ran down the river and waited thirty minutes for the train bridge to open.
