Leeds Ave ramp closed

Boat landings are a very sore subject with lot’s of tri-county fishermen, and water lovers. We are long overdue for a landing on the Cooper. Just remember this when the next election comes up.

What happened to the ramp under 526 off of Virginia Avenue? Is that permanently closed down?

Hey, leave me out of this!!!

Why can’t they build a ramp on the southern end of the old Navy base? They already have a marina there and a big parking lot.

northchucky I was told by DNR that leads was under North Charleston recreation.
choffer, about 5 years ago they were looking at putting a ramp on the south end and the folks across shipyard creek said it would cause a problem when they had ships come in. Would be nice to have a good ramp somewhere over there on the cooper for North Charleston.

Does anyone have an update on the proposed landing on Daniel Island under the 526 bridge? Below link is the only information I could find. Apparently this one has been in the works for 15 years now…

with Leeds closed, I finally got the chance to use Remleys. From my goose creek Trailer spot it took about 40 minutes longer to get to Remleys at 8am on a weekday ( this thursday) I was a bit surprised at the ramp traffic and time to get underway. Lots of recreational ramp users - including me. Could be a compounding of a holiday weekend.

Having recently moved from the Chesapeake, I’m surprised at the lack of quality ramps in the Charleston area. not trying to be adversarial, especially as a new guy. Just an observation.

Guess I got spoiled by my use of Leeds the past few months. QUESTION: anyone know of any groups organized to promote more and better ramps. Certainly makes long term economics valid. Yep - I understand fewer is better in some opinions.

Well they were wrong. I would know believe me

And I agree there should be a ramp there but you are 100 percent correct about the shipyard creek shannangins. It won’t happen

Carolinacoot - I agreed a landing on the south end may be problem. There is plenty of room for a ramp between the existing marina and the new state ports facility.

Plenty of people parked at the Leeds ramp Friday evening, about a dozen trucks/trailers and about 15-20 cars. The opening in the barricades is big enough to squeeze my boat trailer through also…

Thanks nc, I was going of a conversation with a dnr officer when I called about a problem at the dock. I accept the correction gracefully and look forward to meeting you some day on the water.

choffer you can almost launch your boat from the road at high tide in that area. Used to be a ramp a little farther north that needed repairs and a dock. Then the only other issue would have been parking.

Here’s a video of the new traffic pattern that I got off my dashcam this morning.

I launched at Leeds today and I am not a fan of the new traffic pattern, when launching there isn’t really an area to get prep before backing down the ramp. IMHO the old pattern was more efficient.

It looks like that new traffic pattern is going to slow down the ramp usage to me. When the old configuration was in place, you almost forced people to go out of their way to see and use the “make ready” area. Now, with this new pattern, I can assure you that yahoos are going to create a giant incoming line when they are getting the tubes and paddleboards out of the truck in the middle of the ramp…

Well, the verdict is in; they have totally hosed the Leeds Ave ramp with their new layout. We went yesterday to cruise the harbor and intra coastal with the ladies and arrived at about 10:00 AM. The parking lot was already almost full and boats approaching the ramp from all directions because of the new flow pattern conflicting with the old one. No ready lane, 8 or more trailer spots taken up with cars, it was a cluster. We did manage to launch without any issues, just be patient. Coming back at 3:00 PM it was even worse, boats still trying to launch, others coming back in was definitely congested. It seems they have lost parking spaces instead of increasing it. On the way out we noticed trailers parked all the way down the access road on both sides, never seen that before. In all fairness, this was probably the busiest day I have ever seen there and no doubt there will be many more like it. Just take your best attitude, be patient and expect a full blown zoo and you should be ok. i personally wish they just repaved and left the original design alone.

Have to agree with Long Enuff. The old parking area, although rustic, was intuitive (for most users). You could find an out of the way place to do final pre-launch then move into a natural Q. New layout has folks everywhere - all trying to get into a line that isn’t really a line. I avoided this weekend but last weekend was still a cluster ***. Jet ski put ins were totally clueless. Weekdays are still reasonable but that will probably decline as summer months get warmer.

Be patient and help out where you can.
