Lefty video ?

Has anyone purchase the Lefty Kreh video on fly casting?
Is it worth the 20-29-dollars?

lefty has a few good videos on casting… well worth the money… the only true teacher is practice and patience… but lefty will give you some good drills to help you work on your form.

Check out the Joan Wulff instructional seriers as well. If you can find a shop that rents videos and DVD’s check it out, watch it and see if you think it’s worth the money. Stu Apt also has a pretty good series out that’s a bit older but it talks about several aspects of fly fishing with some great tips including the quick start and basic saltwater casting techniques. Just keep in mind that the casting technique that’s most effective for saltwater fishing is much different from what’s tought for fresh water. You really need to be proficient at shooting line quickly, quietly and accurately. you also need to be able to strip strike. Any good casts in the 10 to 20 yard range will consistently get you bit. Any beyon 20 is gravy if it’s quiet and accurte. I strongly agree with Mike, just get out there on the water and have at it, while you can practice in the grass there’s no substitute for the real thing! I also highly recommend that you also practice as much when conditions are less than perferct as you do when it’s nice, as is often the case, it’s seldome calm when most of us can fish! The other suggestion that you may want to consider is to shorten up your leaders from 8 to 12 down to 4 to 6 feet provide you can still get bit. Most of the time you don’t need the really long 10 to 14 feet lenghts that some of the bone fishing & permit pros suggest if you plan to target happy inshore Reds & Trout!

Stu Apte has a great 4 tape series that discusses all different types of saltwater casting. It will definately help you with your short game!

I don’t have a clue, I beleive that I picked mine up at a fly shop, I guess you could Google it and see if you get any hits, I hope it’s still in production because it has a lot of good tip. I’d love to get the DVD version if they make so let me know what you find!

A little helpful advice…wait on the double haul. Understand that the double haul is necessary, HOWEVER…it is supposed to make a good cast…great! Many fly fishers use the double haul to reach casting distances which are supposed to be achieved WITHOUT a double haul. If you put a double haul on a cast which has other problems, you will have issues later on.
So, continue to watch videos and take a lesson here & there to get your NON double haul stroke crisp & clean with control. (50-65 feet.) Then, add the double haul with proper timing to that and you will be well on your way.

Tight loops and good fishing!
