Lesson Learned

I had ice in the cooler and the lines all set. All I needed was gas in the boat and I was good to go.

That’s when I made my rookie mistake…I filled up and when I put the hose back I noticed it was diesel. Atleast I didn’t start the engine but that ended my idea of taking the boat out yesterday.

I figured out how to syphon the gas (I got 5 out of 19 gallons out already) but I’m not sure where to recycle the gas. Any suggestions? Any suggestions on additional containers?

I can tell you this won’t happen to me again

Bees Ferry Dump takes it for free. Turn left before the gate and there is a tank you can dump the gas in.

I had a friend pump around 50 gallons of gas in the rod holder of his Scout 26SF. He was driving down the road with the bilge pump spraying gas out of it. I just laughed thinking about those days.

Recycling center up in Summerville (Central) has a big barrel for such things as well. It’s not well marked, you may have to ask. I think it’s bright red if I recall correctly.

“Sire, it belongs in truth to the Church of God, in whose name I speak, to endure blows and not to inflict them. But it will also please your Majesty to remember that she is an anvil that has worn out many hammers.”…Theodore Beza

It happens. At least you caught yourself before cranking it up and getting a few miles from the ramp! I threw the cast net yesterday without it attached to me. Luckily it was in shallow water and I could get it back hahahahaha.

Thanks everyone for the advice on where to dump it…

And definitely thanks for any shared stories. It helps me not feel so bad

So as an update I siphoned around ~18- close to 19 gallons out. do you think it’ll be fine to fill it up and let it run now?

BobbyRob, I mean no offense, but how the heck to you confuse diesel with gas? Diesel knob is much bigger than a gas one. That’s more than a rookie mistake. There is a joke out there something to the effect “Brother I wouldn’t have told that”. there was a goat involved in that joke.

The good thing is diesel is not near as bad on a gas engine as gas is on a diesel engine.

a good goat will do that you know

I was in a rush meeting a friend at the landing and the station I got gas at before the ethonal free gas was free standing alone. At this station the diesel was.

I didn’t share the story because I was proud of it but I’m looking at it as a learning experience. It’s not something that will happen again. I was also looking for advice on what to do next.

It’s not like I was smoking next to the gas pump or anything dangerous. I can own up to my mistakes and learn from them. If they provide my friends with a lesson and a laugh that’s ok too
