This may be common knowledge but not to me. We have been seeing and marking a good number of Spadefish lately. While bottom fishing Wednesday I was marking Spades and seeing Cannonball Jellyfish drift by. Soon one drifted by and I thought I might use it for bait so a netted it and dropped in the live-well. Not long after that I reached for a live bait to find all my live bait dead??? Everything mechanically was working fine. The only thing that had changed was the jellyfish. I threw it back into the ocean. I later found out on the internet that when stressed a Cannonball Jellyfish emits a mucous that is deadly to small fish. Lesson learned… put Cannonball Jellyfish in separate container when collecting for bait. Live and learn.
Yeah, jellyballs are typically kept in a 5 gal bucket so that you don’t wipe out your bait tank. Hopefully you still had a good day of fishing even after that happened. Those spades sure are some pretty fish and fun to catch. I’ve read mixed reviews on edibility, do you eat them or just catch for sport?

Fishing was still good. Love this time of year. I have found Spades good to eat if you cut the red meat out.

Spades eat just fine, although I haven’t fished for them in quite awhile.
