They were out deep and we found some slingers early before the bite shut off on us. We fished a scattered weed line on a rip in 500ish and went out deep. Cold side of the line was 71ish warm side was 74ish. All the action was on the warm side anf closer to 500. The water was calm, and the weather was great. Fresh Mahi tacos for breakfast were good.
we fished a temp change / weedline out around 1600 ft- caught a couple slingers and couple gaffers- so many boats showed up later that we had 40 in view on the same rip- saw plenty of fish below the weedline that wouldn’t take a bait- I gonna blame the full moon- great seas all day
Thank you sir.

Great boat ride out to 1800 ft and boated one slinger. Found a board around 1000 ft and picked off 14. Saw two huge sun fish, I think what was a whale breaching in the distance, tons of dolphin pods(the mammal) and more flying fish than Ive ever seen. Temps were up to 73 degrees. Weed lines were shotty and mahi probably ate all night. The hard temp change looked like it moved out 10 miles over night as well. I wonder what won the tourney?

We are going out Tuesday as well.
Fished the Edisto side of the dolphin slam. Headed out around 0430 to a very nice ocean and headed south. Crossed a nice weedline in 300ft-400ft range. Seemed like every boat that crossed it stopped and put lines in. Water temp was 69 so we decided not to join and headed for deeper warmer water. Lines in at 1000ft and pushed out deeper. Never really found any weed lines just scattered. Picked at them all day between 1000-1400ft. Water temps were 74-75 for every fish we caught. Ended up with 7 total, nothing bigger than 15lbs. Great weather and my other half ended up finishing second for lady angler. Not a bad start to the season.
Left out of Port Royal Sound at 4 a.m. Headed to the Deli, smooth ride all the way there, lines in around 7 a.m.
Around 8:30 boated our first dolphin after a couple other bites that missed the hook. Stayed at the Deli around 150-200 ft, 71 degrees until 10 a.m. and when decided to pick up and head deeper.
Saw lots of flyers and birds so dropped in lines around 700 feet and 73 degrees. Trolled deeper til 1500 ft. (75 degrees) and stayed around there the rest of the day. Added 9 dolphin fish to the box the rest of the day, mostly slingers and a couple fish in the teens (weight). Lost a couple nice fish at the boat due to angler/tackle failure.
I agree with the other poster, saw more flying fish today that any other trip. Lots of scattered weed but nothing that accumulated to a weedline. Headed home around 430 back to the dock at 730. All in all was a great day for our “team” considering its only our second season offshore.
Really calm seas, one of the nicest days I’ve been offshore in. We caught a few with other colors but for the most part ballyhoo with a green/yellow skirt was the best combo.
Cltdeeruunter and I Left dock at 430 with is dad and another friend. Nice run out! Lines in at 715. We had a tuna fire drill 4 hooked up at once about 745. Lost one at boat, landed 2 one was skipjack he went back in the drink. 13-15 foot tax man Skied with one in his mouth and proceeded to start spoil us. Line got cut. Pick up two singles. Then had Mahi fire drill. 5 out of 8 lines and 4 anglers. Lost one boat side got the other 4. Schooled up under the boat. But could not get them to bite and hook up and they looked small. Set the spread back out and hooked up another hand full that we either lost or tossed back. Fish box was getting full. Headed back to the shallow side of the 226 picked up 2 more one of which was our biggest bull 20lbs range. Lost the other one. Called it a day fish box was packed. Headed in. Stoped At bottom spot. Convinced everyone that they needed to try jigging for AJ’s. First drop rod screaming. We proceeded until everyone had their fill. Hooked up to aleast 9, Boated 4 keep one cause someone wanted to try it. Lost 4 jigs. My dredge was torn up by fish. Destroyed my hands and shins from fish and line. Had some of the best fresh blackended and pan fried Mahi ever for dinner. Went to sleep smiling. Can’t wait to do it again.

Green and yellow skirts were what a majority of our hits were on also.
Stayed out deep all day by ourselves most of the time, nice weedline, ended the day with 38 dolphins and 1 blackfin.
Picked at them at Triple Ledge til the around noon. Pulled 6 off in 74ish and a blackfin. Headed to about 600 where we found some weeds, only small ones out there. Wish we would have made the run to 1400 early.

We left out of Shem creek at 4:45am, cruised at 30 knots with the setting moon off the starboard stern. Made the run to EB in record time and dropped the lines back with great anticipation at 6:40am sunrise. Within 15 minutes the long rigger popped off and after a hefty fight a nice 20 lb BFT was on deck. We reset the spread and trolled for another hour or so with a couple short strikes but no fish. Lines in and off we went to look for warmer water. Found a nice weedline at 1000 ft in 71 degrees and decided to set the spread and head away from the parking lot of boats working the same line. Pulled 4 mahi in the next 2 hours and the bite shut off. We did see a few turtles and a whale? breach, flying fish everywhere. Set the high speed gear up and headed out to 1400 ft, where it looked like 285 at 5pm on a Friday. There must have been 40 boats in sight. We dropped the lines in and BINGO - almost immediately hooked a quad. Pulled the old chinese fire drill and managed to get all 4 fish on the boat. Sadly the biggest one got away during an ill advised photo op… That was a learning experience for sure. Rest of the day was spent staring at mahi that stared back at us with no intention of eating. All in all a great first day of the Mahi season, heading back out tomorrow…

Ran out of Dewees Inlet and ran to the Temp break that was SE of the 226 hole in about 1200 ft. Landed two dolphin but one was a decent size bull that got us 2nd in the Dolphin Slam. Had several short strikes and fought through scattered weeds.
There seems to be some new faces this year. If you are, don’t get too confident too fast. The afternoons will change in about a month. You may not come in under the same conditions that you went out under. Exercise some caution.
