Let's get this forum on the road!

Short dogg, APickett, Jumpin Mullett, Linesmith, Ever clear seas, needda, Waterturkey, rofield, Stonoman, The Therapist, who have I missed?

How are you folks? Ken Boleman here, aka “Papa”. I have asked the administration about a Kayak fishing forum board. And before the ink was dry on this post, here it is!

I would like to hear back from you guys and find out what kayaks you are fishing from, where you fish, what you like to fish for, what you use, whether or not you guide, etc. Just give us all the details either on this forum or our new one. I smell a paddle-in in the making here.

I don’t mean to bore you, but I guess I will start. I have a WS Tarpon with a Surf to Summit seat, a milk crate with two pvc rod holders. I fish anywhere there is water, sweet or salt. I prefer largemouth and striper in fresh, reds, trout, flounder, etc, in salt. I am not a guide, but enjoy fishing with others. Unfortunately, I live in the Columbia area, but call the Charleston area home.

I know of a fellow coming from California who is looking for some kayak fishing while in Charleston, Hilton Head. I would like to hook him up. He will need to rent two, maybe more kayaks, SOT and touring. Also, I think his wife is looking for some interesting site seeing from a yak while they are here.

There is also a guy coming from Virginia who is interested in fishing the Kiawah area. Any info would help.

Thanks!!

My wife and I have rented kayaks from Coastal Expeditions on Shem Creek. They have Perceptions from Easley and are quite nice. I too live in Columbia, on Murray, but love to venture to Charleston to fish offshore, but Kayak fishing has always sounded good. One day I’ll get rid of some toys and spend about 3K on 2 kayaks, but for now the wife and I are thinking of taking our canoe to the ACE Basin.

Hey FinaticMate,
I live around the corner from you in Lexington. Have you ever thought about fishing Murray for stripers from a yak or canoe?
3K, are you talking kevlar touring kayak?
Have a great day!

Nice Sea Touring kayaks, which are plastic, are about $1500 Ea. We like rutters, the way they track, and lots of storage for camping on an Island.

I have caught a few fish while canoeing on Murray, but I usually just toss small Rapalas in shallow water. I bottom fish with my pontoon for stripers. I imagine they would take you for a ride like redfish do.

No two ways about it! The striper are going to take you for a ride. So, what brand of touring kayaks are you looking at?

I am not looking at kayaks now that I know how much they cost.

I have a WS Tarpon. It was under $800 if my memory serves me. I would be glad to let you take her for a test ride. It is a Sit on Top, tracks well, is stable, and is probably the most often purchased kayak for fishing today. Let me know if you are interested.

GREAT forum topic! I’m an avid fly guy looking at kayaks for the last 2 weeks. I live in beaufort on the weekends and charleston during the week, I figure a kayak is the best way to go fishing in both areas. I’m relatively new to the area, I’m in the navy and did the last 2 years in Bahrain, but I’m really wanting to get on the water again. I fish both salt and fresh (sweet), have 2 fly rods (6&8) and would like to hook up with someone to show me the waters.

Mike,
There is a forum called “Match-Up” over to the left. You might post there and ask. This forum is just getting started, but I have met some really nice guys already. Linesmith might be one to check with. If I ever get down to Charleston or Beaufort, I might give you a hollar.
