As opening day of bow season approaches (this coming Friday for me), I was curious as to what instrument of death my fellow “stick and string” hunters were taking to the woods with them.
I go with a “1-2” punch. First up, my Hoyt Carbon Spyder ZT 30.
This is hands down my favorite bow and my “got to,” but I do have a back-up.
My “at the ready” #2 bow is a Bear Arena 30. Since this is a 60lb bow (my Hoyt is 70lbs), I tend to shoot this one more during late season when I’m wearing more restrictive layers of clothes that affects my ability to draw.
I am a sales consultant to PSE. PSE Pro series is top of the line. I’ll be at the factory in Tucson end of month and get to see the new line.
I remember seeing my first compound bow 50 yrs ago. I think it was a Hoyt or Mathews.
They were allowed to compete against recurves. Can you imagine having to shoot against a Compound and release shooter and you shooting a recurve with fingers.
Our group invented many of the first releases and many designs are still in use today.
My last competitive shoot was the World Indoor Championshis in Las Vegas.
Me shooting a recurve with my homemade release and the winner shooting a compound.
Hunting, fishing, and poker are my sports. Work when necessary.
I don’t have any pictures of mine, but I shoot a Parker Phoenix 32. I have been shooting for around 5 years now and love it. I would love to upgrade but its just not in the budget right now. Have a friend who shoots a Hoyt and that is a sweet shooting bow, I think when I do upgrade im going to get a Hoyt.
Drake, There are a lot of websites/archery forums out there that have “classified” sections where you can find VERY good bows in excellent condition for VERY reasonable (sometimes even VERY cheap) prices.
Thanks for the info and the offer bangstick. I actually just had my Parker re-strung so I think ill just continue to shoot if for now. I only bow hunt a few times a year. Don’t get to do it as much now that I have kids but my oldest is getting to the age where I can take her some and it works a little better when im with her to be in a stand 200 yards away from where the deer will be.

Yeah, but do you consider a dog to be a filthy animal? I wouldn’t go so far as to call a dog filthy but they’re definitely dirty. But, a dog’s got personality. Personality goes a long way.

LMAO!!! Right!!! I have one set at 1lbs and one t 10oz ha,ha,ha,ha,ha. I have killed my share of deer with the old Neanderthal-stick and sting-method, so I can pick a little too, in fun, of course.

Not as nice as your bows but it’ll kill stuff. Redhead/diamond toxik xt. Almost used it this evening but let the young fella walk. I see youve already had some success
Sweet! Functionality is far more important. Doesn’t matter who’s name is on the bow if you can’t hit what you’re shooting at. Thanks for sharing, Fracwilt!
Yeah, I managed to get on the board with a nice doe. Hope that’s a sign of things to come.
It’s a bow. It may look like a “gun” and no, you don’t have to worry about getting busted drawing your bow, but you still have to get’em in archery close and make a good shot for it to be effective.
I find it funny how “purist” bow hunters frown a crossbows the way “purists” did when the compound bow was introduced. Personally, I have no problems with crossbows. Quite frankly, it has grown the archery segment of the industry and has gotten more people into it. I know several people that bought a crossbow and then wound up buying a compound (I know a couple that even got into traditional archery) because they loved archery so much.
I used to love shooting compound, but bought this one after shoulder surgery.
Yeah ive shot a few with it so far, none this year yet. this is the last one i got with it. I use it in the back yard at the house because i have neighbors too close for rifles.
