LightSquared dealt serious blow over interference

RESTON, Va. LightSquared was dealt yet another blow in its effort to build a wholesale 4G cellular network.

The National Telecommunications and Information Administration (NTIA), a federal agency that oversees government and military spectrum use, ruled Tuesday that LightSquared will inevitably interfere with other devices, including GPS products, which use frequencies neighboring the spectrum licensed to LightSquared.

As a result, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) said it is proposing lifting its conditional permission for LightSquared to operate.

There is no practical way to mitigate potential interference at this time.

  • Federal Communications Commission statement

“[The] NTIA … has now concluded that there is no practical way to mitigate potential interference at this time,” the FCC said in a statement. “Consequently, the commission will not lift the prohibition on LightSquared.”

The FCC, while hoping LightSquared might help with the ongoing spectrum crunch, has said all along that any commercial operations for LightSquared were conditioned on being able to operate without interference to existing devices.

“The commission clearly stated from the outset that harmful interference to GPS would not be permitted,” the FCC said.

For its part, LightSquared maintained that the NTIA findings were based on flawed studies and said it “remains committed to finding a resolution with the federal government and the GPS industry to resolve all remaining concerns.”

I wondered why we were even considering jeopardizing the extremely valuable function of the GPS system. Now I see - http://dailycaller.com/2012/02/28/lightsquared-ceo-resigns-amid-revelations-of-companys-proximity-to-obama-white-house/

So much for the most transparent and ethical administration in history.

BoatUS: We Aren’t Out of the Woods Yet
on Navigation System Concerns

Public Comments to FCC Needed by March 1

ALEXANDRIA, Va., February 24, 2012 - While boaters view the FCC’s move on February 14 to revoke approval of a new broadband telephone network shown to interfere with the country’s sole navigational system as positive news, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) says we aren’t out of the woods just yet. It is urging boat owners to continue to submit comments to the FCC by a Thursday, March 1 deadline to ensure the nation’s system of global positioning devices keeps boaters safely on course.

Last summer, over 18,000 boaters along with many other GPS users wrote the FCC asking the guardian of the nation’s airwaves to stop plans by LightSquared, the builder of the proposed broadband network, until independent tests proved there would be no interference with GPS devices which operate on adjacent frequencies. LightSquared originally asked the FCC for permission to build 40,000 network ground stations across the country. Recent government reports concluded interference issues with the GPS system could not be overcome.

“Despite the great news last week that the FCC has acknowledged interference issues with the LightSquared proposal, we’re not ready to declare a victory,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “Given this company’s tenacity over the last year, we want to make sure that boaters’ needs are remembered as the FCC makes their final decision.”

BoatUS: Navigation System Concerns Still an Issue
with Latest Move by LightSquared

FCC Extends Public Comment Period Through March 16

ALEXANDRIA, Va., March 1, 2012 - Just a few days ago, Boat Owners Association of The United States (BoatUS) cautioned that America’s boaters weren’t out of the woods just yet with the possibility of the country’s sole electronic navigation system failing as the result of radio signal interference issues from a newly proposed cellular broadband network. Yesterday, the FCC green-lighted an extension of the public comment period to the network’s proposed builder, LightSquared, to allow comments through March 16. BoatUS continues to urge boaters and all users of GPS to submit comments to the FCC to ensure the nation’s system of global positioning devices keeps Americans safely on course.

“At every turn LightSquared has proven its resiliency to delay the inevitable,” said BoatUS President Margaret Podlich. “This latest move is no surprise, and we hope the additional two weeks gives GPS users the chance to have their voice heard,” added Podlich.
