Some friends and I had a pretty good day with the trout yesterday. We caught ‘em wading in about 2’-4’ of water on plastic and top water (Top Dog). As a bonus, I caught a nice bull red in about 3’. He bit the plastic, also.

Thank you, Capt. Larry. The ten of us had 250 trout…that’s ten limits.

Thank you! We were fishing out of Venice. The limit on trout is 25 per person per day.

The ten of us went in two 22’ Ranger Bay Boats. As soon as we were on site, we all got out and waded.

Is the same place where you can take a seaplane to? I saw an article about that option in Saltwater magazine and a show on the WFN. Good stuff!

redfish4sure, yes it is. Two float planes came in while we were fishing. I see float planes there quite often. I’ve often wondered what they charge for shuttling folks out there to fish. I know I’d take 'em in my boat for a whole lot less.

I appreciate your replies, Harold. What guide service are using out of Venice and where do you stay? Although the fishing looks FANTASTIC, I have heard there isn’t much else down that way. Can you give some ■■■■■■■■ of that aspect of your trips there?
Thanks, Mike.

Hi Mike,
I don’t use guides, but I can recommend some good ones. The first two I recommend are Captain Larry Averitt and Captain Brent Roy. Both are on Facebook and both have websites. There share a camp/house together with one other guy. They are not business partners, but they do help each other, especially when there’s a group too big for one boat.
When I go, I stay in my houseboat/camp/floating man cave. There are lots of places to rent by the day or by the week. For 2-3 people, accommodations are available through Venice Marina. For larger groups, I’d look into renting a houseboat. Fred Lewis has a couple that he rents directly if you call him, but they are also available through VRBO.
As for things to do in that area, I’ve told friends (especially ladies) if you aren’t fishing or working on an oil rig, you really don’t have any business in Venice. The first time I went down there, I noticed that it is only about 65 miles from New Orleans. I thought, GREAT! I can fish, come in and clean up, and go into New Orleans at night. In reality, I’ve been going since before Katrina, and I’ve NEVER gone back into New Orleans at night. It’s an hour and a half drive each way. All I want to do at night is rest.
The fishing is fantastic, but weather in the spring has ruined many trips. It’s very difficult to plan a month or two in advance, because you can’t count on the weather cooperating. In the summer months, weather is much more cooperative.
If you’d like to talk about any more particulars, feel free to give me a call at 931-607-8784.
Hope this info has answered a few questions.
In the morning, I’m going back to Venice and will be there for at least the next two weeks…maybe a little longer.

THANKS for all the great advice, Harold. I will call you in a couple weeks to chat a little more. This trip would be for my wife as she LOVES to fish and Venice is definitely a bucket list item.
Tight lines, Mike.

Crazy thing is the trout fishing in the Biloxi marsh is more consistent. That whole state is Spec heaven. Think how good it would be if the cut the limit to 15. I take it the river level is fairly low…?

Actually, the river is way too high. It’s really going to get good when the river goes down.
