And as far as the whole “don’t overthink it” dilemma, that’s BS. If people didn’t “overthink” fishing, tackle shops would all be about the size of a kiosk in the mall and their staffs would be cut back to one or two people. Besides, “overthinking” has led to some great innovations in the fishing industry. No, it’s not a matter of “only needing” the bare necessities to catch a fish. It’s about what you have confidence in. It’s your gear, tweak it how you see fit. If what you’re running gives you confidence, use it because confidence is one of the most important things you can take to the water with you.
No matter how much it hurts, how dark it gets, or how far you fall…you are never out of the fight.

You propose a false dilemma (“overthinking” vs “bare necessities”). This equates to “overthinking” vs “underthinking”. There is actually a third option here though… Can someone speak up for the class?
I don’t care about “confidence”. I only care about catching fish. I know a lot of “overconfident” people who can’t catch fish. You can talk about white braid vs mahogany braid for all I care, but if you aren’t putting fish in the box, your words mean squat. I’m not overthinking anything about that comment.
PS… On the rocks. Frozen margaritas are for ladies.
for your specific reel, I would keep it simple and do 40lb momoi diamond hi visibility. Plenty of capacity and strength (40 lb diamond momoi is 40 lb diameter, but usually actually tests around 57 lbs if I remember correctly). for regular trolling, you want mono, and the high visibility also helps.
Don’t make things difficult, it’s a small reel fill it full of 30lb mono and catch a few fish. If you’re worried about breaking strength kick it up to 40 or an over test 30lb like Momoi Diamond. You might push 600 yds with 30, step back to 500ish with 40lb.
I remember growing up, as a small child and my dad used to tell me… “son, you can &@&$t in one hand and troll with 130lb white braid in the other and see which fills your cooler faster”. Words of wisdom to live by.
Ande 40# from Wal Nut. They been making it for 50 years… The sun degrades all fishing line. You’re going for Mahi…not Marlin. Braid for bottom fishing.
300-600 yards of line??? You spool a 30 and you got a fish…or a poorly set drag!
Spend your money on a drag scale and set your strike drag correctly. Hook ups will be solid and you know how much drag to push without breaking.
Braid is over priced like fluro…fish are supposedly not as smart as the fisherman…they don’t know the difference. It’s your money…I put mine in fuel.
Skiiinnnej needs to work on his sensitivity.
Hooking a fish is one thing, putting them in the cooler is the porpoise of all of it.
Forget all the BS about braided line for trolling. For dolphin, all you need is plenty of 30-40 lb mono. You want the stretch that mono offers when you’re trolling for meatfish. If you are concerned with capacity, put a few hundred yards of 80 lb braided line on the reel as backing and then fill the rest with monofilament. The mono is what you want to fish with and the braided line is just there as extra insurance.
Look i’ll give you the skinnee on the situation, white braid, white braid, white braid, and white braid. Secrets aren’t told they’re kept… but seriously 50s for offshore trolling was what I read, he didn’t say just mahi. Most people troll smaller than 50s for mahi, set up right a good 50 can be multipurpose. I will say momoi is very good mono, I own it and use it for leaders inshore or when in a lot of structure. If you are new to fishing or braid don’t use it because its a takes little more knowledge, awareness and experience to fish braid effectively.
A Penn Squall 50 LD is Penn’s version of a TLD25. You are thinking of a Penn Squall 50 LD 2 speed which is closer to the size of a 50 class reel.

Can you show us a fishing picture where your "technique" paid off? Sounds to me like you read too much Florida Sportsman magazine.
And yes, he actually did say “Line for mahi”.
Again, just show me one successful pelagic tournament team that spools a reel slap full of white braid and tops it off with a 6ft leader. If you can do that, then Keanu Reeves and Lawrence Fishburne will bust down my door asking me what color pill I choose.
Just bought 2 new Penn Sqwall 50LD Combos, what size line do y’all use for offshore trolling ?
266 World Cat
Twin 130 Honda
You get your question answered? Getting hard to get a straight answer on this site sometimes, kind of have to pick through the posts. Mostly good people here, just some of us like to argue amongst ourselves. But that’s a good thing, keeps some from posting things that just are not true.
Just go with the simple answer like Dockman and a couple others answered. I’ve not been offshore in a couple of years, but when I did go regular we mainly targeted Dolphin and would occasionally bump up troll speed looking for a Hoo and never changed our setup.
We used Momoi Hi Vis Diamond (yellow) 40# for trolling. With multiple lines out seeing your line is important to me. I wouldn’t go so far as using white though.
Mdaddy had a good post and what Rappchizzle said … "I want the elasticity from the mono… "
And here is where some may call me out. You said you want to target Dolphin, I’d stay at 40# and pretty much whatever you want except all braid (use it for a filler and back up like some said if you think you’ll need extra line). When you hit a hot spot Dolphin would bite the bait being pulled by a clothes line. They ain’t particularly finicky like some other off shore fishes.
I know two Brothers that have been out to the deli and picked up few Dolphin already. I thought the season would have come in a little sooner this year, but then that cold snap…
“If Bruce Jenner can keep his wiener and be called a woman, I can keep my firearms and be considered disarmed.”
I was thinking of the 50 class model, my mistake. 6ft leader? I run a 40ft Plus wind on top shot. Y’all are stuck on this stupid tangent rather then the actual topic. Nearly every thread with more than a few post is loaded with the usual girls bickering I know it creates attention and more post and site traffic but its negative and seems the site has turned over the last few years and is getting pointless and useless. No one puts up good info or reports because they no the vultures will come. Keep killing the site.
Well, I’ve been here since the site opened like 15+ years ago, so if if it’s only “[been killed]” in the past couple years, it might be from the new guys giving advice on things they clearly know nothing about.
Maybe nobody has posted reports that much because it’s just now April and last year was one of the windiest on record. So, there is always that…
Just for the record, braid (no matter what color) is HIGHLY visible in water. It doesn’t matter what direction. If you are comparing it to something like a tuna, then looking down at a black back makes them almost invisible. Looking up at a white belly on a sunny day, the look like a big black silhouette. I can tell you this from personal experience, not from a magazine.
Monofilament is the most camouflage you can get. When we are spearfishing we avoid using clear monofilament because it’s dangerously invisible. We use dyneema (basically braid) and colored mono because it’s safer for us (we can see it if we get tangled in it).
He called you a girl and this is your come back? Place is gettin soft. Next thing ya know, beards and Patagonia will be required to login. Fletch would be sad

I’ve heard better insults. They have to be up to a certain minimum quality level before I will even consider responding to them. This one didn’t meet the bar.
mdaddy said I needed to work on my sensitivity.
So, basically I am killing 2 birds with 1 braid… I mean stone… Sorry…
