Line set up

Does anyone rig each of their rods like this? I do it with all my rods, fresh and salt. A knot my dad showed me years ago to make a double leader above the swivel and I’ve just done it ever since. Didn’t know if anyone else set up their rods the same way for a little extra strength above the swivel and ease of changing set ups.

How is the other end of the double line start and end?

Tied in a normal circle knot wrapped twice. Not sure what you call it but tied to make a loop in the line then wrapped twice for extra strength to not slip

Yes all off my trolling rigs are setup with the offshore swivel knot (what you have shown) and a long Bimini twist to make the double line. I have never found a reason to change the setup. I would use a smaller snap swivel for 25s and maybe black in color.

I use the exact same line setup. I’ve always called that terminal end knot an offshore trolling hitch. With a bimini twist to double it.

Only swivels I have with snaps. My large black ones aren’t snap swivels. Is there any type I should be getting strength wise? Idk the strength of these but I can’t imagine the 25’s to have the drag to bend them.

I wouldn't spend the money now to replace them but when you reline your reels next year I would use 80lb sampo. I use 130lb sampo on my penn 70s and 50s. No matter what size you get always spend the money and get high quality swivels. No barrel swivels!

I try to spend $$ on line, swivels and hooks

I swear…For years I have just tied a good knot without the Bimini twist and lost very, very few fish.

I don’t do the Bimini twist knot @ the top. I do a regular ol elementary school loop knot

Mainline tied directly to the swivel with a simple palomar. Fast, easy and reliable.

If I’m rigging them at the house at liesure I tie a bimini twist, but usually on the boat or in a hurry I use a spider hitch for the double line. It’s a very strong knot, and fast and easy to tie.

I almost always use a double line ahead of the leader when expecting big fish. Most fish are lost boat side, they make that last hard fight when they see the boat. That’s when it’s nice to have a few wraps of the double line around the reel. It also gives you more to grab hold to when wiring the fish.

IGFA allows a 20’ double line and leader combination for good reason. It works:smiley:

I'm second the spider hitch. I'm not smart enough or patient enough to tie a bimini twist. I like to dummy proof things, and as Larry is saying, the spider hitch is pretty easy for dummies...

That being said, double-line is a must, especially for small swivels. The lighter your main line is and the smaller swivel you are tying to, the more important the double line is.

I’ve done it both ways, and can tell you that I use double-line for the very specific reason of having the knot break off at the swivel which I have seen on many fish before I was smart enough to use double-lines…

For trolling gear with smaller line (<50 lb mono and any braid) I tie a Spider Hitch or Bimini to make the double line and use a Cat’s Paw/Offshore Swivel knot to my ball bearing snap swivel.

For trolling heavy tackle (60 lb mono or better) I tie my single strand mainline to my snap swivel with a Benjamin knot if I have time to tie it at the dock or a Palomar when on the water.

Agreed that your snap is overkill. An oversized snap swivel will create a small bubble trail in the water and is prone to a bite off. It sure sucks when a $50 lure is bit off at the snap swivel!

The swivel really isn’t very big. Any smaller and I would question strength. It may be a photo thing. If I knew exactly make and size id let you know but it’s not big. I use just a little smaller one while striper fishing.

It looks like it’s as wide as the spool but it’s not nearly that big.
