Another decision to make, hoping to gain some knowledge from those of you in the know…
My poling platform supports are stainless. I may have remade in aluminum, but either way, I will be coating the metal in something black. I’m stuck on what to use.
I want to stay away from powder coat I think, too many horror stories and problems. That led me to AwlGrip. Works fine, lots of work to apply, cost is high, etc. Now I just spoke with the Line-X guys, and they are raving about the stuff in marine applications. The cost seems to be significantly cheaper, even cheaper than just the materials to use awlgrip.
Can you guys think of anything else to consider? Thoughts on Line-X?
Also, I have 8 very small hinges that are on my hatch lids. They are stainless as well. Any ideas on how to get them black and not chip and flake around the “hinging” part of the hinge?
What other franchises are doing or claim they can do is not the same.
Tell Brian that Wes sent you. Ship it there and back or catch a ride on work that’s coming or going from up here anyway. It will last or he will fix it.
There is nothing better for metalwork on a saltwater boat. Don’t waste your time or money if it’s a boat you plan to keep for a while…
The texture and clean-ability of what’s done elsewhere is night and day different.
I’ve never used it myself, but seen a lot of people who have and it looks really good. Don’t know about different brands of it, but Phin generally knows what he’s talking about.
Do you know how hot black gets in the sun shine! I redid a 23’ cc ( including replaceing all the stringers and re flooring with treated plywood only glassing the seams) 10 years ago and had the whole thing Line-Xed! Then painted it with Hatteres white 2 part urithane, It still looks as good as the day it was done! I have used the boat to pull nets and have hauled doors over the sides and only a few small scratches. Awsome stuff if installed right!

Yes I do and wouldn’t even consider it myself. The famous Nat Hershoff once said that the only proper colors for a boat are white and black, and only a fool would paint it black. I tend towards light grays on the inside myself. White is hard on the eyes and black is too hot.
I’ve got black LineX on my boat. It doesn’t get nearly as hot as the powder coat. I used to powder coat but never again. The PC gets too hot to touch in the summer and chips way too easy.
I like Brian’s product, but he’s so busy that I had a hard time getting his attention.
I won’t be standing on the supports of the platform, and rarely even touching them, I’m not worried about the black. And as YnR said, the Linex doesn’t really get hot like paint and powdercoat.
