Hello. I have recently gotten back in to fresh water bass fishing. My son is using the zebco 33 but practicing in the yard with a spinner. I was wondering what type of line you all prefer for bass fishing. I went with a guide in AZ last summer that had braid tied directly to all lures (top water, drop shot, etc)on all spinning rods but I do not remember what kind or pound test. I grew up using Stren mono but was wondering what the experts prefer. Mono. Braid, Flouro? Pound test? Thanks.
I’m not a expert, but I do bass fish a bit. Fluorocarbon is hard to beat, especially in clear calm water using finnesse baits such as plastic worms. Basically, fish can’t see it and it has much less stretch when setting the hook. It also lets crankbaits run a little deeper because it sinks instead of floating. Most of the striper guys I know use fluorocarbon or fluorocarbon leaders for live bait and/or cutbait fishing.
If you choose braid you can easily tie a fluorocarbon leader on the end of it. Mono works great for reaction baits such as topwater and spinnerbaits. Others may have different opinions.
I’m not sure how well fluorocarbon will work on a Zebco. I mostly use baitcasters and only an occasional spinner.
I use 20lb Spiderwire Stealth on mine witn 3 foot of 12/15lb mono or florocarbon. cast really good on a spinning reel since the 20lb braid is only 6lb mono diameter
I spool up my daughter’s Zebco 33 reels with 10 pound mono. I’m not real picky with make of line, I use Excel from Bass Pro Shop, which I find works just as well as Stren.
The closed face reels won’t cast very well with any kind of braid.
Mono is what I use, I don’t know if there is any truth in it but a buddy of mine is an avid bass fisher won’t use braid because he thinks if it rubs on anything (lilly pad, submerged limb, etc) it spooks the fish.
I like using 20- 30lb test.
My nephew was fishing my pond yesterday and the only thing he had luck with was a top water plug.
