Hoping to find some fresh lionfish. Does anyone have a source this time of year? Who’s your lionfish guy?
Thanks in advance,
Carl

People really only mess with lion fish when grouper are open since it is hardly worth it to dive 80-120+’ to spear a few fish sticks in the middle of winter. They are easy enough to kill in place and leave while grouper hunting but even then most people don’t bother bringing them back.
That being said, I have seen some turkey sized ones that yielded huge fillets but still not worth winter diving just to target them.

Freezing your tail off to get stung by a lionfish! Sounds like fun!!!
I know that I will receive negative sentiment for this, but let’s be honest, a market for lionfish is never going to take off in SC unless there is some special trap to catch them. In my mind, the reward is just not worth the risk for divers.
Well you don’t see my ass out there diving for em!
It’s actually for a friend who’s working on an article for the Local Palate. They’re hoping to get the article published around the time diving season picks up to talk about the flavor of the meat and try to encourage lionfish harvest. It’s too bad there’s not a more effective method of catching the spiny little bastards.
It sounds like they may have found someone to go out and shoot some. I’m sure they’re not doing it for free!
Thanks for the replies!

You had Bonz at “palate”.

Me too… Most of their articles are drool-worthy! Hopefully they can get a hold of some. If anyone is headed out anyway, let me know and I’ll put you in touch with one of the editors. I’m sure they would be grateful and they said they are willing to pay.
Thanks!

Need a dredge. Just suck them up to the surface! Alaskan underwater gold mining style.
I dreamed one night of a vacuum gun thing that sucked water in but with a Y channel diverted lionfish to a bag or bucket and shot water out the back. We can get so close to them with a pole spear but it would be far quicker to suck them up and then still have time to spend searching and enjoying the rest of the dive. Not only do they require more precision to handle but there is no guarantee to find them on every spot. While they are on many spots and thick on some spots, they are not on every spot and do move around some like other fish. We need to kill them all but hard to do it efficiently right now
