Lionfish

Interesting article on the Lionfish problem in the Caribbean. I know some of you divers see them off of our coast.

I do take exception to the term “murder”. They are fish, not children.

you would be absolutely correct…chefparrothead prepared some for us a while back…it was very, very tasty…

My take from the article: Don’t miss.

Bonzo72 - That looks awesome.

Fried mine. Very tasty.

Bonzo. Yes. Thanxs. Great pic. That was my take of Lionfish nachos. Broiled and flaked lionfish tossed with a soy dressing. With a seaweed salad and wasabi aioli on a fried wonton.
Looks good Bottom. Long as they are being taken. Jamaica has recently came out with a report that they have seen a drop in 60% of the lionfish population around the island due to fisherman taking them. FYI. Jamaica also has a commercial processing plant for lionfish. They have a fishery and I am on the waiting list. They don’t sell to the US yet but if ever. I will be first to know.

Very nice

chefparrothead, would you be interested in seeing a targeted commercial trap fishery for lionfish? I learned from some Caribbean fishermen how they used female lionfish reproductive organs for bait and trapped nothing but a bunch of male lionfish. I am trying to get support for a pilot program to see if trapping around here would be effective beyond normal diving depths where there are more and bigger lionfish.

if you are still talking about an invasive species then I see absolutely nothing wrong with this, and would encourage local economies to embrace it…

The beauty of trapping invasive lionfish with hormone bait is that there is almost no by-catch since only male lionfish are attracted. The Caribbean fishermen that told me about this technique said their traps would be stuffed with nothing but male lionfish.

Okay, so it is settled, a Lionfish Fish Fry. Bonzo, pick a date and I am there.

Does it really help to control the population by taking out the males? From a hunting perspective, shooting feral boar hogs has little effect on numbers. If we could lure and trap females - then we would have something!

Lionfish won’t trap in any numbers with regular bait and divers can’t effectively target them in most of their range. Trapping male lionfish will thin them out while supplying consumers. It will also take pressure off of other species by giving fishermen another target and removing large numbers of an invasive species that eats many young snapper and grouper. This will not wipe out lionfish, but it is a step in the right direction.
