The report doesn’t say what happened really but lionfish are not aggressive to divers. Article is pretty terrible in my opinion. Swimming ain’t diving and the article says both.
My guess is that it was a spearing gone wrong or someone was either ignorant or stupid. Would like to know the real story.
Narcosis
Didn’t get to many details about how it happened. I know he was diving at 100ft. We were more focused on getting EMS on scene and relaying medical advice from the doctor on call.
Hot water is the remedy - as hot as you can stand at the sting site. It breaks down the venom. And get to a hospital asap. Some people can have a fatal reaction to the venom.

Got hit last year, and it is the worst pain I have ever experienced in my life. Been stung by Portuguese man-of-war, stingrays, and a hardhead catfish but nothing compares with the jolt you get from a lionfish. I will cut the line anytime we ever catch one offshore from now on. I will never mess with one again ever!
