My buddy talked me into going out to the 226 hole in his 20ft Key West. Never been that far out on that small a boat. I talked him into running out before daylight and he told me he didn’t like doing that. He was scared of hitting something…like a submarine or something.
Fifteen miles out, he pulled the throttle back to idle to mess with the GPS and as we were idling forward the boat stopped abruptly sending us forward. Looked to see what we had hit and low and behold our flashlights lit up a huge tree floating in the water. Good thing we were only idling.
Got on station and hooked our first fish…a nice sized Dolphin. Second reel took off and we thought we had a good sized “Wahoo” on…WRONG! Started fighting the “Wahoo” and noticed a nice big colorful Blue Marlin skipping across the water and wondered what he was up to…then I realized he was attached to my line. Fought that bad boy for about an hour til we touched the double line and noticed a shark eyeballing him so put it to full drag to end the fight before the shark got a bite of this tired boy. The line didn’t break thankfully and we brought him up, took a few shots and let him loose.
Tally for the little boat trip: Less than 50gal of gas burned, 7 Dolphin, 3 happy men, 1 Blue Marlin (that I would love for someone to estimate his size for me) and 0 Wahoo But still a good day fishing!
We measured the Blue Marlin at about 14feet by marking him on the boat.
wooooowwwww!!! nice haul…oh… I did the math there is no way a 20’, single engine boat can go out to the 226 hole catch nice fish and return alive…it must be at least a 23 1/2’ boat…
Great story. Next time get a length measurement from the fork in the tail to the tip of lower jaw. Then get a measurement of girth from just behind the pec fins. This will give you a very accurate weight estimate.
No doubt that it is a grown fish. 300lbs + could be bigger would be my guess.
