Little shrimpers at JIYC 10/6

Took the family out last night for some shrimpin. One-poled in my usual spot, didn’t get a full cooler but that wasn’t what this trip was about!

Beautiful night on the water

shrimp picker in action!

We didn’t catch anything until full dark, but it was pretty steady after that. Most were pretty good size, tapered off towards the end.

Only got about 1/4 cooler, but it was still the best night I could ask for!

Saw quite a few other boats out there, anybody do any good?

Awesome pics. Love when I see mom and dads excited to take and spend time with their kids on the water!

They are. Type V, so they only count as approved as PFD’s if worn, but the kids love them - a lot more comfortable than a standard lifejacket and better for swimming too.

Been using those since my youngin’ was old enough to fit into one. He loves it and has no problem wearing it. I highly recommend them for any child. Lots of flotation for its size/shape.

That trip definitely was not about the shrimp. I gotta get me some of them floaties.

Awesome

very nice, wolfie!

my dad took me when i was a towheaded rugrat and i will never forget it.

That’s as good as it gets. Enjoy them while they are young. You’ll turn around a couple of times and they’ll be grown.

That sunset picture of yours is almost exactly the same as the one I took last year. I have a print of it in my office and we all agree that you must shrimp in the same place. I came out there late saturday night, after dark, and set up. My wife and I could here the kids, they really had a good time. It’s too bad we couldn’t have gotten more shrimp. We got about as many as you did.

I was out there as well, but on the dock by JIYC. Didn’t use bait, just casted the net. I figured with all the people shrimping out there, I could get some wayward shrimp. Got there around 8pm, casted until 1:30am. I ended up catching enough for a dinner or two, plus a lot of mullet, a Lookdown, some squid, and a ton of what I call bait/salad shrimp that were thrown back. I kept a few of the bait ones for my father in-law. He caught a few decent sized whiting and a crab net, complete with good sized crab. The best part was just hanging out, shootin’ the breeze, listening to frustrated boaters, etc… May have to do it again next weekend.

we don’t need no stinkin’ boat

Thanks everybody - it was a great night! We are really going to miss the lowcountry when the Navy sends us off for our next adventure. Maybe I can find a way to get back here someday!

lol, obviously not too worried about giving up my “secret” spot… oops! they’re out there once it gets dark but it’s been a lot of work to get any numbers so far.

Great pics and it looks like the kids had a blast. I haven’t been shrimping for a long time. I never seem to get back down to Charleston during shrimp season. Maybe next year
