little tunny

I went offshore last week for only the second time, and at one point we had triples going. All were these little tunny. Fun fish to fight. We only kept one, because i wasn’t sure if you were allowed to keep more than that. I have the nsmf permit, but it’s not specific on that fish best i can tell. Can anyone tell me if that’s correct. What’s the rules on the little tunny? As far as size and how many you can keep. Thanks.

All you want. They are too bloody to taste good! God for shark bait.

You may want to do some research.

No limit.

They are far better eating than most people give them credit for.

If you like fresh blackfin then you probably won’t be able to tell the difference between fresh tunny and fresh blackfin.

I don’t know how well it keeps in the freezer though. I have only had it fresh.

Would you eat it raw??

Yep. Cut it into 1 inch sushi strips and I doubt you can differentiate between tunny and tuna.

I will have to get really drunk one day and try that.

ditto greg1… bleed them when they hit the deck and grill them fresh.

Yall have fun; you can have all of them. Count me out. BBBBllllleeeeecccckkkkkkhhhhhh!

BTW–to those here who are saying that little tunny is good–are you sure you didn’t eat some skipjack thinking it was a little tunny? The two look sort of similar and people confuse the two all the time and refer to both loosely as “bonito” (a misnomer applied to both skipjack and little tunny, while an actual bonito is a separate species all to itself). There are loads of skipjack busting on the surface right now anywhere from 200 feet on out. It seems like we usually catch them more in deeper water and the little tunnies more over or inside of the ledge.

Just a thought. I can tell you without a doubt that little tunny meat looks nothing like blackfin meat, and that blackfin meat is almost identical to YFT in every way. I can’t disagree with anyone on how little tunny tastes, though, because I’ve never eaten it (and never intend to ). I grew up here and we (and all the other locals I’ve ever known) have always considered them trash fish and just cut strips off of them for trolling bait (works well, BTW) or threw them back. I imagine sharks would love them.

To each his own, but you won’t catch this white boy eatin’ those bloody things. I may try a skipjack one day, though.

I dunno about much but our good friends Rich Tudor and Tom Rowlan called them some type of tuna on an episode not to far back and said they were great to eat.

Keep casting.

Yeah, that’s why I asked: I’ve read that skipjack are good eatin’ (while little tunny has always looked nasty to me). Penny wanted to try some skipjack last time (we caught a couple last week), but she got freaked out when she saw the meat. LOL. I told her that everyone up at the dock would think she was trying to clean a “bonito” (little tunny) and laugh/sneer (and from what she told me, they did). I wanted to clarify the difference here because people always refer to both of them as “bonito”, while they are actually completely different species.

All things eaten are not always pretty, but they are eaten anyhow. Just turn on your local adult channel and see.

I used to fish for “little tunny” on the fly up at harker’s island in NC. We called them false albacore though, and I was always told they are not fit for eating. Now that I have become more of an offshore fisherman here (nearshore in my boat, offshore in other friends) I know that they are the same fish. Personally I wouldn’t eat one no matter how you cooked it, and sushi style is OUT the question!!! lol, have fun guys. I usually keep them for bait, caught almost everything on them too from bull reds to cobia to sharks to schoolies and even other falsies. I think everything likes them. GREAT chum too! but you guys can have all of my share for sure

Like Greg1, I have personally eaten little tunny/bonito and would place it on the same table fare level as king mackerel. I seasoned with Italian dressing and grilled. Everyone should at least try it once.

If anyone has ever in thier life eaten canned tuna , then you have had skipjack or albacore mixed in!!! You guys have no idea what your missing if you’ve never par boiled a litte TUNNY and then made fresh tuna out of it. It turns snow white when boiled just like all the other species of tuna, add mayo etc… No guts no glory!! Can’t believe Lee hasn’t tried SKIPJACK, go buy YFT in the store…lol

we got this one the other day. Seemed like a pretty decent one to me. Camera lens is all messed up, hence the glare.

I feel compelled to say, few things can’t be good to eat after a good soak in buttermilk and a marinade afterwards.

Umm, you gonna eat that?©
