When you fish a finger mullet or mud minnow under a popping cork…how do you hook him? I hook em through the lips when drifting on the bottom or a carolina rig but never put one under a cork only shrimp. I would think you would need to hook him middle/top of back so he could swim properly.
Just try it a few different ways… as long as you’re hooking the bait in a spot it wont kill it I dont think it will be a problem. I usually hook mine through the nose on the top part of the mouth.

Mud minnows through the lips. Finger mullet in and out through the eye sockets unless blues are chomping baits, then through the body just behind the anal fin

through the nose. i think zipping their mouth shut with a hook tends to kill them quicker.
Minnows of all types through the eye sockets if possible is what I seem to do the best with. I also do use corks on minnows more than I have them on a bottom set-up of some sort.
Blues will certainly cut 'em from time to time.
I’ve tried a ‘new to me’ way w/ live shrimp, must say I saw it on the tube a while back…Kinda hard to explain, but-First, Run the point of the hook through the ‘back’ of the shrimp just ahead last section of meat in the tail. Then, turn the hook point towards the nose, and re-insert it from the ‘belly’ side back into the tail just forward of the initial entry point. This will mostly hide the hook, and if you’re working a cork, or on a jig head, it really looks good, just like a shrimp would act when fleeing a red. But, the shrimp will die more quickly as it is getting pulled backwards, flooding his gills, The fish can’t seem to resist it’s action.
Tight lines everyone.
Through the nose always worked well for me. they seem to stay alive longer.
What TOO BUSY said, I like the shrimp thing SALTHUNTER and will try it
Local Boy, Just having fun.
Small bait the lips, larger the tail.

Forgot to mention…when we start catching the ‘strong’ finger mullet, cut their tails right when you rig them, they paddle hard, but won’t pull the rig around too far. Also, good scent is released!!!
Yes, I usually nose hook’em, but sight casting w/ the tail hookup is deadly.
