Who all uses live bait in their yak and on what kind of rig if you do? I was always run into the problem of not having anywhere to put my bait bucket in the yak besides in between by legs because my kayak isn’t really a fishing kayak. Does anyone have any suggestions? I’d love to be able to bring some mudminnows with me.
I have a WS Tarpon 14. I do as you said, I put the bait bucket between my legs, while moving. When I stop, I just put the bucket over the side until I move again. It can become cramped, but that is yak fishing.
I always try to carry live mud minnows/finger mullet as well as some cut bait and artificials. I keep my live bait in one of those yellow/white flow troll bait buckets and keep it on a line. Hang it over the side when stopped or moving real slow. Otherwise I stick it in the cargo area in back. I am working on some kind of bracket or something to hang/set it on in front of me, so I don’t have to twist around.
I usually put out a minnow trap out the night before with hard dog food in it. I get a dozen or so mud minnows. The Frabill Flow Troll bucket works pretty good as mentioned before.
Sardines in soybean Oil Like $.60 a tin… they can’t stay away and when you pick up your trap give it a sharp jerk and the sardine cakes, any that are left, will fall apart and fall out of the trap so when you dump your minnows in your bucket all you get is minnows not soggy bait…
A smaller gatorade bottle with holes punctured through it all the way around 3 quarters of the way to the top, then drill a whole thru the cap and the tie a knot off on the bottom end with a peice of string, this will hold 12 or so mud minnows or live live shrimp and will have no problem staying alive and also will hardley be able to tell your dragging anything… hope this was helpful
