What is the best method for keeping shrimp, mullet, and menhaden alive if I do not have a livewell on the boat? I have tried a minnow bucket, but the only thing that I can keep alive in one is mud minnows. Thanks
Old cooler with battery operated aerator.
fish today work tomorrow
You may even consider a small frozen water bottle if it is a really hot day. This will keep water temp down.
5 gal bucket it cooler with aerator(bubble box)… frozen bottle is a great idea too on a hot day. Also I have my bait separated, most fragile bait in the minnow bucket that’s going overboard, and the minnows or mullet in respective buckets. Use the flo-troll to scoop out the majority if water and replace the water in the buckets every 15 min w/o aerator, or every 30-45 minutes with one in.
5 or 10gal round work cooler with hole drilled in top. Zip tie or attach however you like a mr bubbles or similar unit to the cooler slip the hose through the hole you drilled in the top. keeps water relatively cool, circular shape ideal for not beating up baits. This has been the best system for me on boats that have no live well. have even taken it offshore and kept baits frisky for hours.
Thanks for the recommendations. I did not know if the bubble boxes actually worked or not. I will work on that today. Re-wired my trailer yesterday and got the motor to run. Hopefully I will be on the water within the next week to give a fishing report. With my little experience the report will probably say I got skunked, but I am still excited to get back at it.
menhadden have to have fresh water… bubbler wont work very long for them…
Shrimp and mullet will live as long as water doesnt get too warm.
Bubble them til you get to where you are fishing, then put the bucket overboard.
