LIVE BAIT

I set up a bait tank at my house to hold fish for when I go offshore fishing. Keeps from having to find the bait fish in the morning when you’re trying to run offshore. Just wondering if anybody would be interested in buying bait at the landing before they got out, maybe between 4 and 6am. Its a 250 gallon tank and is set up with saltwater. I will fill the tank with fresh live bait on Friday night or Saturday morning. I would just be offering this service at Remley’s or Shem Creek boat landing, which ever I get a bigger preference for. Just trying to figure out if this is worth getting another tank and keeping it in the back of my truck. I would have all the legal licenses and permits for selling the bait. Just let me know if you’re interested and I’ll make my decision.

I think I would set up a few Sat/Sun mornings, put up a sign and see how you do. I would be surprised if you didn’t have quite a few interested parties that would rather buy it there from you than spend time catching bait.

Yes, I also posted this in the offshore forum an I have a good bit of people wanting it.

Sell ballyhoo on good weather days at 4am, you’ll sell a bit! Live FM would be cool

county will not let you sell at the county landings. We were looking at having a mobile bait van a few years back and the county will NOT permit you to sell at the landings.

Sells is correct…something illegal for money to change hands at a public ramp, hence no beer, soda, hotdogs etc are sold at a ramp.

Alright, that’s good to know. I figured if that was the case, the bait tank will fit in the back of my boat with no problems and I’ll just sell it off the boat outside the landing

I think it’s a good idea depending on how often you do it and what type of bait you are selling. Basically you need to whip up business cards and pass them out and put a “LIVE BAIT” with cell phone number plastered on the side of your boat. When I would buy bait in florida, I could call them the day before and make sure that they would be out in the morning. Not only were they there, but they were normally there before I got there. There was a lot of competition down there and they were pretty competitive. I think that reliability is the key thing. I think you could stay pretty busy in Charleston if you got a lot of repeat business and were on the water quite a bit.

I go offshore every weekend and as long as I leave the landing by 6, I’m good. If I can’t sell from the landing, I’ll sell from the back of my boat from 4:30 to 5:30 on the weekends. Menhaden don’t stay alive long enough in any tank so I’ll just be selling mullet. I’ve had mullet, croaker, and shrimp in my tank for the past couple days and still doing great but I’ll mainly be filling the tank with bait the night before I go out.

I am shocked by the lack of places to buy live bait while on the water. Tolers is the only place I have bought some mud minnows from. I am not sure if there are any other places. Somewhere to buy love menhaden and live shrimp would be the ticket. Sometimes you run out and sometimes its hard to find your own especially before sun up.

Charleston has a pretty healthy sportfishing industry in the spring through fall, why are there not better options?
