There used to be someone who sold live herring or shad off of the road to Acapulco. Is he still there? Also, as I remember this gentlemen had his deal set up on the honor system. Anyway, if anyone has his name and number, or directions, I sure would appreciate it. Hoping to take an old college friend this Saturday up by Big Man’s, or if there is a better place on the lake would love to know. Thanks in advance.
Go to the gas station early Sat morning that sits on the corner of 378 and the rd that goes to Acapulco. Follow the boats turning down that rd. There will prob be 15-20 boats all getting bait from David sat morning with the MSC tx going on.
Then just follow them to their fishing grounds…lol… i haven’t been out on murray in about a month but just pull the banks and shoals anywhere from the elbow to the rivers and you are sure to find some fish.
Had some friends new to striper fishing buy some shiners (sold to them as herring) for $6.50 a doz. this week at the landing on the river. They did catch some nice fish tho! I saw the shiners in there bait tank the next day they lived well in saltwater and bait saver and the aerator running! What a rip off!!
Why a rip off? This time of year, shiners work quite well. On Jan. 4th this year, a friend caught a 35 lb’er on a 4" shiner in the river. I have caught a 37 and a 34 lb’er on shiners in Dec. and Jan.
They will live for a week in a 5 gallon bucket and for two months in an aerated live well.
Rick is right on ,shiners are good bait for winter fishing. Your buddies may not have done as well with herring seeing as they were new to striper fishing .I’ve also caught good fish on shiners in the fall and winter months.
I’ve caught lots of fish on shiners! But @ $6.50 a doz. telling them they were herring is what i’m talking about! shiners will stay alive in a soup can frozen to the deck!
