Not bashing Haddrell"s because I love the customer service and all the products but I buy live blue crabs at my local see food market for about $12 a dozen.
Just curious, but a dead crab catches fish too. and you can get those much cheaper. That is I’m assuming we are getting them to fish with. If I were using live crabs I would be fined for them being a little under the legal limit.

A Dead crab will “wash out” much faster than a live crab will. $2 per crab isn’t that bad of a deal if you only want a few to fish with. Quartered you can make them last. Breaking them in half for Bonnetheads is a different story. If you see a crabber on the water “most” of them have no problem selling to you, just have cash.

Wow!! 2 bucks for a crab. What happened to a 6’ cast net, a filet knife, and a sandwich bag full of smoke grey grubs? I guess the adventure and knowledge from catching bait has been discounted down to the lowest common denominator. I wonder what is next…stocked fishing ponds with public restrooms and vending machines?
By the way I will always buy my cast net, filet knife and smoke grey grubs from Haddrell’s, and to be honest I’ve swiped my debit card many a time for a couple dozen shrimp when I was feeling a little pressed for time and not in the mood for the taste of plough mud.

The crabbers will help you out…or the seafood markets. They take a little effort to keep alive so I guess $2 each at a tackle shop is fair. I have fished with crab many times but in my experience live minnows (mullet, menhaden or mudminnows) and live shrimp work much better and stay on the hook better. We only buy crabs to eat and only keep the one or two that die before making it to the pot for bait. Do yourself a favor and get a good cast net and a sabiki rig and you won’t worry about bait any more. Most of the time we end up catching more fish using Gulp shrimp and swimming mullet than any other live or dead natural bait we have used…and that is definitely better than a mouth full of pluff mud! …just sayin’…

I don’t think they bought up ALL of the crabs out there…just enough so those who are a little pressed for time and not in the mood for the taste of pluff mud can enjoy more time fishing

Yes, I will say, there have been days I would pay $2 a crab … especially if I am not passing a seafood market

Unfortunately we don’t have the luxury of buying crabs hundreds at a time. So that means we cannot necessarily match a seafood markets price. It is strictly a convenience for the fishermen, I would not hesitate to pay 2 bucks a crab at 6:15 Saturday morning when I am wanting to be in the water by 7. And as far as buying them from a crabber goes, unfortunately you know as well as i do. When you REALLY need some, there won’t be a crabber in sight. Just posting to let everyone know we have them so they could knock one more stop off their list of things to do the day before a fishing trip.

The truth.I needed some bad and no crabber in sight.Haddrells may think about freezing crabs???
Stonoman
Joe…I have brought a few crabs home from crabbing with my dad and frozen them. I usually wrap the points on the shells with a little paper towel and vacuum seal them toast longer.if you don’t the points will cut through…have them ready to take a few along for trips wherei might not see a crabber or catch any…I also take dragline with me sometimes…toss it over whenI anchor…and scoop them up…or wait for Donnie to catch me some as he swears they search him out. Lol…I’m the freezer queen…even freeze jelly balls. Lol

Mr. Joe, we usually do freeze the ones that die on us and sell them for $1 a piece. But the frozen ones don’t hold up nearly as well as a fresh one. They will wash out much more quickly in a heavy current.
