Live bottom

Guys,
I have a 19 ft bayboat. On calm days (and wife and kids and work schedule permit!), I will venture out to the nearshore reefs (Capers, 4KI, Anglers). My question is: Is there live bottom within this distance or do you have to go farther to find decent live bottom? If there is, what should I look for on sonar? I’d like to find some spots that are not loaded with 11 inch black bass! Thanks in advance and Merry Christmas to all of you.

Yes, there is a lot of good live bottom in the 50-60’ depths. As far as being loaded with 11" bass, can’t help you there! Many of those spots will be covered up right now… It’s not that there are not other fish around. It’s just that it’s hard to get your bait past a hungry BSB. I had a 6" BSB tried to eat my ear one time.

Good luck getting away from the smaller BSBs on live bottom. Get a maps unique chart and look at the live bottom there. Not a far ride from the jetties. When we get on top of the schools of BSBs like that, and are trying to target the bigger knottyhead ones, we’ll switch to big jigs with bigger hooks. The little ones will still strike, but most of the time the bigger fish are the only ones that can get the hook all the way in their mouths. The big silver weighted diamond jigs work well.
