Live well troubleshooting

Live well pump quit working and I had probably only used it 4-6 hours. I had to replace the toggle switch anyway since several have broken. The pump and electronics are quite accessible. Is there good way to determine if power is getting to the pump with my multi tester? Trying to isolate if it is an electrical or mechanical issue. Thanks.

Cut where it is spliced at the pump. Test for 12 volts with the switch on. Also test the pump. You can use a drill battery to touch the leeds to.

Or start at toggle. Test power in, then out. Then move to the pump as stated before. Your problem will reveal itself

I would first check to see if the pump impeller is turning freely. Sometimes it can get jammed with a piece of shell. Then I would check the power to the pump. Cut out the splice in the brown wire going to the pump. Set your meter on 20volts D.C. Hold the red meter lead on the brown wire and touch the black lead to the negative battery terminal. With the pump switched on your meter should read 12+ volts. If you have power there I would go ahead and replace the pump.

what dorado said about the pump having debris in it.

First thing I ever do if I have problems with a live well or bail pump is take a water hose and back feed from the boats outlet. In my experience this has cured an issue with trash stopping the pump impeller 80% of the time. Then go after electrical or pump failure. I Usually do this after flushing the engine.
