Lobster Video

I think more people are struck by lightning every year than ate by sharks. Most bites to humans are accidental and happen in murky waters on the beaches. They usually only take a small bite before they recognize that you aren’t a fish. In blue water they aren’t much danger. There are some times when it is prudent to get out of the water, and that is usually obvious by their body language. I’ve got the heck out the water in a hurry more than once[:0] but in general they just ignore you.

May 21, 2010 - Absolutely not! More people are killed by being crushed under vending machines a year then are killed by sharks. In underdeveloped

I have a link for you too:

Man, with 3 aggressive encounters on divers from big sharks in Charleston so far in June alone, I am not sure why anyone would want to get certified nowadays! They seem to be getting much worse now

They’ve been here since the dinosaurs. Just more people in the waters now and more news reporting. You are big on facts, I think the experts say there are a lot less sharks now than there used to be. I have no verification of that. Shark fin soup being one of the reasons.

skinnee, you have to have ulsers.

the shark thing was not the purpose of the video.

That was a good video, and man those lobsters look great! The shark in that video wasn’t big enough to even think about attacking a person.

Yes, I am more interested in local stuff though and the run ins on divers in the area seem to be getting way more frequent. These are not reported.

I’m just saying. There are some big animals out there. Part of the sport, I guess… There is nothing that will make your stomach drop when you look up from the ledge in 20’ of viz and see a tail darting off at the last possible moment like he didn’t want you to see him coming… Just keep your head on a swivel folks… Oh, and keep your heart rate down. Don’t sound like frightened prey under water.

Let me know if you have any questions about "buoyancy control". I'm just here to help! Viva la coral!!!

Yes there is, yes it is. The ocean itself is more likely to eat you than a shark is. There are bears in the woods too, but I’d rather go see the bear than sit on the couch

When I am looking for bears, I always put the honey buns in my partner's backpack when they are not paying attention... I figure that if the bear wants us, he will smell the honey buns while I make a quick exit.

The sharks are a part of it albeit a small part. Offshore extreme diving is not what one would call a safe sport to begin with. All I am saying is why not just enjoy the video and keep the negative out. Is watching a movie in the public cinema safe. I would bet that more people have died watching a movie in the local cinema than have died spearfishing off the coast of Charleston. Yet you do not hear people say man I would not recommend anyone going to the movies; you could get shot. The forum has a way of bringing the negative out on any little report. Guys make the forum enjoyable keep the negative comments out. There should be a forum for negative commits that does not interfere with most of us who would like to enjoy our reports.

You are right. I think sharks prefer newbies anyway. They are super nervous with the water leaking in their mask, wondering if they are getting enough air, and hoping that they don’t lose control of their BC inflator and come up too fast. That drives the heart rate up… Well, that and only being able to see a few feet in the summer and not knowing what is watching you. And when the heart rate goes up, you just sound like a wounded menhaden out there.

Sorry for the post. I remember why I stopped posting. It just gets too complicated. I just like enjoying nature; thought everyone else did also.

I'm simply amazed by how sensitive some people are... I did't even use a fat joke or anything.

You should be catching the lion fish in the video. They are awesome table fare. I know they are poisonous but are one of my favorite fried or grilled fish in the ocean

we did shot about 30 lions on the next dive. you need a special bag

Capt. Gregg C.Newman

geez the music had me looking for a gun to shoot myself lol.

What bag are you using for lions? I usually leave them because I don’t know how to handle.

Don’t get too rattled by the comments, I was just stating it’s not all peaches and cream in the ocean when you have dead fish and live lobsters attached to you. I would hate for somebody to get hurt/in trouble from not being aware.

When we got started diving, we got certified and jumped in, probably not the best idea so DFreedom, get your son in contact with some people who know what they are doing and are willing to show a new person the ropes.

Yes, I am all about safety and doing things the right way. My hopes are that he can hook up with some folks down there who are safe and responsible divers that can teach him the proper way to dive. He’ll have to offer to do scut work (clean boat, etc…) for rides out. As a college student, he won’t have a lot of disposable income and Mom and Dad won’t be footing the bill for entertainment. Looks like he is doing his “pool work” this weekend with the hopes of doing his open water dive next month when we are down in the Keys. He is very excited.

Don’t quit posting. I really appreciated the video. I have been wanting to get certified for a long time but have never had anyone to go with. One Day I will get it done!
