Lobsterfest 9/29

took a big crew(realfish01,jonas, jimmy, jordan and carig) today to try and cover a lot of new ground, capt put a lot of time into old nav charts, pc research and old logs trying to find good hard bottom out in 110’. spent half a day reading the sonar and dropping the cam down without much luck! bsb’s were everwere but not what we were looking for. havent seen any decent grouper in less then 100’ lately so we had to try. ended up on some new #s closer in and did ok, 11 lobster and two nice hogs.

tons of ars on our last dive and saw some super big bugs in some holes we could not reach, need to come up with a longer snare.
awesome weather today with just enouph cloud cover to keep it nice. ocean was flat all day, temp was 82 top to bottom, viz started out @40 and went down to around 20 by last dive with the current ripping south on the full moon! will be in georgetown next 4 weekends for the spearfishing lionfish roundup!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

great trip and report Ed and Crew

Nice fish guys. Ed, have you ever tried catching lobster with a mop??? Long stick, clingy mop-head, reach deep, tangle them up then pull them out!? You might look funny rolling in but it gives a new meaning to a “reef sweep.”

Mop may work good too for grinding up lionfish. Just get them tangled and mush them up against the reef. A buddy of ours got stuck yesterday and wasn’t too happy about it.

Ouch…Its like a bee sting, everyone is different, but survivable as long as you get some Benadryl and heat (162F or more) on the spot. I carry hand-warmers on the boat all the time which works pretty well to denature the poison and numb some pain if you get hit. Of course Kevlar-laced gear that keeps you from ever handling them works the best

Outstanding!!! Good job guys! Wish I could have made it! Also… In the process if picking out a vacuum sealer for keeping the meat fresh. Will experiment with it, and if it works as advertised, I’ll bring it to the dock for “on site” use!!!

We did that a few times last summer. Not the “mop” end, but a long, extendable mop handle that would reach about 15 feet back under the ledges…

As for Lionfish… I have gigged at least a dozen over the past few dives. Just run them through, then grind them up with the dive knife. The triggers & BSBs love them, once they are wounded/dead. You are absolutely right about the Akona Kevlar gloves. Not just for messing with Lionfish, but great back on the dock, for cleaning fish!!! The grip is amazing!

PS: If a fly lost it’s wings, would it be called a walk?

Or one can tie a big hoook to the end of a pole and hook em that way, oh, wait, not legal here!! Used to be how we’d catch em in Mexico all the time after being shown that way by the locals.

Some nice bugs and hogs you guys got for sure!

FWIW, lionfish makes some incredible sushi.

Clip all the spines off with some cheap metal shears and toss them in the cooler, if you have a reasonable way of getting them to the surface.

Vic, as you know all holes are not the same. Its hard to carry every tool you may need. sometimes the mop is best and other times the snare is best. in 20 ft of water you can run up to the boat but 1n 100’ you have to go with what you got. some times you just have to let them go!we do have a ledge that is 18’deep but only 1’ high and we could not reach them, next trip eric rigged up a small net on a 18’ expandable painters pole and we got 19 out of that hole. anyways I’ll take a 11 bug day any time!

If it got any better I couldn’t stand it.

Very nice, maybe one of these days I’ll tag along!

Ed,
looking forward to having you and your crew at the Tournament. Sign up now and save a few bucks on the registration.

Thanks,

ps,
The fishing up here has been awesome. Great viz coming back, big grouper showing up inside of 150’ and warm water top to bottom; finally. I think the tournament is going to be timed just right.
