local advice

I am considering doing some fishing while in Charleston late this week. Weather looks like good chance of rain Thursday and Friday, with temps in high 50s to high 60s, with SE winds at 12 mph. Any advice, given current water temps, recent bite, tides, winds, and so forth, on whether a $400 half-day charter is worth the money?

Dear chok…Anything is possible, and seasoned guides know where to go and how to do it. If you set your expectations on the experience and knowledge gained it’s always worth it. If you are setting expectations on the number and size of the fish you hook, well this time of the year can be a challenge. The Charleston area waterways are the best way to see Charleston. There is history and mystery all around. Being on the water as the sun comes up over the Atlantic is a soul inspiring sight, and it sets the tone for memories beyond catching fish. You could blow the money on a fancy overpriced tourist experience like eating at a peninsular restaurant too. It’s not what I would choose.

P.S. Never leave the dock without rain gear!!

Thanks, Boss. Yes, I like all that you say. Makes sense. But have had enough bad charter experiences to last a lifetime, to be honest, and like to ensure I at least have a good chance to CATCH fish and not just “go fishin’” if I am paying money for the privilege. Thanks again.

If you get a trip to one of the local artificial reefs, you will catch fish. Just a matter of what kind and size. You can easily put a hundred or more fish over the rail, just how many you have to put back over the rail depends on location, location, location.

Chock, I can recommend a good charter to use. My family used them before and I highly recommend them.

If I were booking a trip this time of year and wanted to catch redfish it would be with JR WAITS or PETER BROWN. Those 2 fish more then anyone I know right now. They are on top of what is going on and where it is happening.
