Trying to get some info about fishing the creeks around charleston. I fish from a SUP and have been going since the winter. I usually go to different boat ramps and fish the surrounding creeks. Battery Island, Limehouse, County Farm Landing, Folly River. Anyway, whenever I go the water is very dirty no matter where I paddle. I have spooked some fish because I can’t see. Do the fish still bite when the water is dirty and where do you find clean water? I moved here last August from Long Island, NY so I am still figuring things out. I realize I have to put in my time and that is what I am doing. Just wondering if others find the water quality to be the same. Thanks for listening. Any info would be greatly appreciated.
The muddy water , of course, depends on the rain; obviously this spring mud has been a problem. Won’t be long before the end of spring mud and the rain season.
Now that winter is over the water isn’t going to be clear anymore, but that will not effect the fishing. In fact, I prefer dirtier water because when I’m sight fishing I can get closer, present my bait, and have multiple shots at a fish before he sees me. Water clarity doesn’t seem to be much of a factor for me, because if you are sight fishing you will still see them finning, tailing, pushing wakes, chasing bait, etc. I wouldn’t spend a lot of time trying to look for an area where the water is clear, b/c that most likely wil not help you. I would put in the time to find areas with larger shallow mud flats, grass flats, and oyster mounds. You will be able to fish in some very tight and shallow areas not accessible to boats on the SUP. I try to take advantage of that in my kayak and you will definitely be able to do the same on the SUP. Hope this Helps. Tight lines!
