Anybody know of anywhere where they catch Bowfin on a regular basis ?
My grandmother says she grew up eating them and has been craving some. That woman can make anything coming or crawling out of the water tasty.
I’ve got access to a boat and dont mind traveling 50 miles from North Charleston, SC.
Rice fields sound as good advice as any. Bushy Park freshwater side would be good too…of course it is connected to the Cooper River through Duraham Creek. However, be aware that there is a mercury advisory on mudfish in every body of water in the state. They must be mercury magnets. I know she is in advanced years, but…
Yeah I believe they’re Mercury Magnets cause what i’ve read they can live up to 10-30 years depending on your source. Thanks for the input, I have a kayak sitting out on a ricefield off of the cooper, just never fished for Bowfin. I do know that there are monster carp out there, one hit our kayak and about tipped us over ha ha ha
If your willing to travel a little there are lot’s of places that hold some big mudfish. I personally would love to see a large quantity gone, they are heck on bream and small bass.
You’ll need a boat for most areas. Pretty much any landing on the Edisto upstream of Westbank landing in Jacksonboro. Best place I can think of is the Combahee “Eddy”. Put in at the public landing off Hwy 17/21 go upstream to the “Tea House” (Cherokee Plantaion) first big place on the left. You’ll see all the rip - rap on the left bank keep coming (1/2 mile) and you’ll see a creek branch off to your right. Pretty much any where around there if you can’t catch a mud then something is wrong. Cut bait, Shinners, Worms, crawdads, and any artificial that a Bass would strick.
No secret in making them taste good, just don’t do like I’ve seen a lot of bank fishermen/women do and leave them to overheat in the sun. But that would ruin any good fish. Keep them alive or put em on ice. Funny how people tend to think bowfin are poor table fair, and on the mercury issue, large mouth bass and catfish are just as bad, if you believe our government’s assesment.
Good luck! and what you don’t keep throw on the bank.
Its gonna be hard to specifically fish for mudfish. Your just going to have to do a lot of catfishing and then eventually get one. For example, its like fishing for eels, eels eat night crawlers on the bottom, but your gonna catch a lot of other fish before you eventually get an eel.
i used to eat mud fish all the time. mud minnows are about as good of bait you can get. they will live in brackish or fresh water. the only way you can eat a mud fish is to cut the tail of fish real good where he can bleed real good. cut the fish cross ways like a shad, horse collar. fried real crisp lide a potato chip. have some thick grits and you are good to go. You can’t hardly eat him if you don’t bleed him real good. I always had better luck fishing in a swamp. mud fish is hard to beat if you fix him right. good luck let me know how you make out
