Hi Guys, Im a long time fisherman, new to SC & The Charleston Fishing Forum. After reading your posts for the past couple of months Ive been facinated by this sport of Kayak fishing. It sounds like a great sport & lots of fun, not to mention a much more economical way to spend a day on the water & meet other Kayak fishermen. I have been doing quite a bit of Kayak researching on my own but could use some advice from the real pros. Guys like you who have the experience I lack. Im a big guy, 6’0" and over 250lbs.[:0] Ive been told that the Ocean Kayak Prowler Big Game Angler is a very good choice for a guy my size. Does anyone know anything about this kayak? Any other big guys out there who could reccomend a Kayak? What options I should purchase? Any advice you could give me is greatly appreciated.
</font id=“navy”>Thanks, Hope to see you on the water soon.

Robinhood,
I too am a big guy, 6’2" about 220-230 depending on how good i eat that week, and I have a Malibu X-Factor. I love this boat, it has a 600lb weight capacity so I can carry as much stuff as I want, and it also has a built in childs seat if you have kids. These boats are highly customizable, and you can outfit it to do whatever you want. Also even for a big guy like me, I can stand up on it. And its stable enough to throw a cast net or fly-fish. check it out at http://www.malibukayaks.com/kayak_xFactor.asp
If you interested in pricing or have any other questions just gimme a hollar or swing by the shop, we are a dealer so we can order one for you if you really like it.
Both me and a good friend of mine have these boats and both of us are in love with them, they are fantastic boats.
Good luck, and tight lines!!

my two cents: don’t buy from anyone that won’t let you take the boat out and give it a paddle…you wanna give it a good test, paddling into wind…standing up…storing all the stuff ya wanna take…etc.
also, since you’re new at this, i’d be glad to give ya some advice re: places to put in, techniques from the yak, strategy, etc…shoot me a PM if ya like
im with livestoked test test test. see if mike will let you give one a run but theres always our trusty dolphind dave at time out give him a call tons of knowledge and demo a boat. once you get one let me know ill show you around a bit.

Robinhood, I’ve got a WS Tarpon 140, great boat for me, but not for others. livestoked hit the nail on the head. Your going to be sitting and fishing out of this yak for hours…last thing you want to do is get a yak that’s not right for ya. Know a couple of guys about your size that fish out of a redfish…?

Thanks, all of you. Everyone has been extreamly helpful pointing me in the rite direction. I’ll be sure to test at least a few different Kayaks to rate the pros & cons, comfort levels & handleing. Oh yea, and the price comparisons. Mad Mike I will be getting in touch with you. patrick-isc & livestoked I’ll be happy to take you up on your offers. Very generous. I’ll get in touch with dolphind dave also. MudRoc, Thanks for your imput. I’ll add the Redfish to my list of boats to research. Ive met alot of fishermen over the years, some great guys, but you guys have gone the extra mile for me. I’ll be taking my time, learning & trying to avoid mistakes. I’ll keep you all posted.
I have a Redfish/Marquesa and for you size it will be a great boat. I am about 6’ 235lb and that is what I use to fly fish out of great stability, I stand, sit sideways, crawl to the front hatch and is fast enough for fishing and sight seeing, I would be glad to let you try mine out.The only negative is if you plan on carry alot of camping gear in the front hatch ( it is small)but I get everything I need in it for a days worth of fishing.
I am also looking to get into kayaking. Mine will be used mostly on upstate lakes/swamps,rivers for ducks and some fishing and then I will also bring it to IOP several times a year for fishing.
What are the advantages of sit on top v sit in kayaks?? and what would you recommend.
