I am looking for an inexpensive cast net for catching bait (finger mullet and such). I have couple of 1/2" mesh nets but the smaller fish seem to caught so I wanted something 3/8" or 1/4" mesh. I have seen such nets in mono and nylon mesh. I have never had a nylon mesh net, can anyone here shed some light on pros/cons, etc… and where I might find a good deal on one?
As a young man my grandfather used a nylon net,in my opinion they are easier to throw, sink faster and easier to mend but it takes more care.Just my opinion.
I have heard that the nylon mesh tends to hold water and get heavier. I have noe real experience, but that is what I have heard. I use mono nets myself. Probably what 99% of the guys on here are using.

Get a cheap five footer mono and plan on a new one every year. You may have trouble finding a cheap net in anything but 1/2 in. mesh. They are repairable, with some patience and learning the knot - you make the knot and them move on a space and do it again until your net gap is closed…good luck, NaClH20 (and superglue the knot)
Penfishin or her dad might know the right knot.
I have a couple of 1/2" cheapy nest, I just get tired of catching FM by the gills and having to stop to pull them out. I just thought a smaller mesh net would be nice.
I have an “old salt” by Betts 7 foot 3/8 mesh that I use to catch mullet. It drops pretty fast. It occationally gills some of the smaller mullet. I have been please with it. I got it 2 months ago form Haddrells for $56 dollars. I had one just like it that lasted 3 years until I ripped it beyond repair on an oyster bank that I did not know was there. It casts very easily. It may be more expensive than you want but it is worth the extra time you don’t waste pulling out the mullet.
SaltHunter,
Was the 1/4" mesh mono or nylon? I’ve been looking for a 1/4" mesh mono net for a long time and the only ones I’ve found are 8’ radius and bigger.
I’d rather fish than eat.

Salthunter, if that is the one you were throwing a few weeks ago, that is what I am taking about. I’ll check Haddrells the next time I’m in town. Thanks
