Looking for a little guidance

I just started fishing salt water and the river system, moved here from the midlands, so I am all tunned to freshwater lakes, and bass tackle. Went out several times with no luck, I put in at bushy park, fished the “fresh” and salt side. So here are the questions, and be gentle guys, lol… Do the freshwater bass baits work for saltwater? I hear its all about the tides, 2hrs before and after are prime times? mud minows are a waste? swim baits and soft plastics, I hear they are very good to use? catching your own bait, where?. Just trying to get a little foothold on all great fishing thats around here.

thanks guys, and gals…

> Yes, I’d say that Reds and Trout will readily take most any freshwater bass baits. Your hooks will probably rust. Topwater plugs can be changed out with galvanized trebs.

I hear its all about the tides, 2hrs before and after are prime times?

>Yes in general, for reds especially. At high tides the reds and bait will move up into the grass. High tide can be great for trout. I’d say any time the tide is moving is best. Tides near the new/full moon can be a challenge at mid tide due to the amount of water moving and the water clarity is usually bad.

mud minows are a waste?

> Not at all!

swim baits and soft plastics, I hear they are very good to use?

> Yes. The scented variety (Gulp, Scented Zman) work really well.

catching your own bait, where?.

> Get a cast net if you don’t have one. Cast into little coves in the grass and you should load up on finger mullet and shrimp

> No problem. Post up your reports. If you live near Bushy, consider coming to the Summerville Saltwater Anglers next club meeting on Oct 10th. You will learn everything you need to know and meet a bunch of great folks by joining the club.

If you wanna catch bait best thing to do is go up in creeks at low tide and you will see bait fish pushing up

a predator fish is a predator fish…recreate any situation you find in freshwater in terms of points, drop offs, and structure(s) and the fish will follow. Use the same baits if you want…

don’t go running up shallow creeks on dropping water.
