Looking for a mentor

Been living in Cola for a couple years now working on my Master’s degree and fishing the local rivers. I frequently get down to surf fish the Charleston area and fish the rivers in what limited land access I can find since my boat is still at my parents place- except for the couple times that they’ve been able to bring it when they visit. The good news is, I’m finally going to have my boat in March. The bad news is I have a lot to learn. I spend a ton of time on here reading posts, blogs, watching videos, etc., but would love to get out and get my hands dirty some. If anyone ever needs some company on the boat I will gladly split costs, help with whatever is needed, and so on. I like to think I’m pretty good company but then again I’m a little biased. Thanks fellas

Nothing beats time on the water. Since you’re in Cola, I suggest you get a canoe or kayak and learn to fish the Broad for smallmouth and largemouth. There should be some local resources and groups you can join up with. I was away from the coast for a few years in the DC area and joined a Smallmouth group and learned to fish the upper Potomac. Learning to read the water, currents, structure and anticipate the fish I think has directly translated to better success now that I’ve moved back to the coast. Plus, it was a lot of fun. If I was in Columbia, I’d be all over it.

I spend alotta time on the Broad and Saluda around here and do pretty decent. I grew up on the banks of a really good smallmouth creek and put countless hours in fishing there. The little time I have gotten to spend with my boat on the coast, I’ve found success fishing it like I do smallmouth at home. Find structure and current breaks and fish them- and it’s paid off to some extent
