We have a 2003 Deville DHS that blew an alternator, and I’m in the middle of swapping it out (not a fun task but not too hard either, could be worse). Front cam cover/valve cover seems to be leaking onto the alternator.
Anyhow, this car has a handful of oil drips. Most shops look at it, toss their hands in the air, and say “we don’t really do that”.
I know one of them is the oil pan, which requires you to drop the whole engine, and I figure I might as well have several of them done at once. Looking for a local (reputable) shop that knows Northstar engines…other than the dealership. I’ll trade the car in before I’ll pay dealership labor costs on a car this old.
I know this isn’t a cheap fix, but swapping alternators because it’s choked with oil (and that sounds like it might be a fire hazard) is just cray-cray, especially when you have to remove the air box, radiator, trunk, headliner, and rear wheel lugnuts just to be able to access the alternator via the catalytic converter
I know it’s not a cheap job, but I’m putting a half quart of oil a week in this thing, and it’s ending up on my rental home driveway, which doesn’t make for good tidings with the landlord lol.

Oh, the infamous case-half seals. I have a buddy up here in Orangeburg that does them regularly, but he works for the caddy dealer. I will ask him what he would charge for the job outside of work.

I’d check with Richards Automotive in west ashley. He is a stand up guy and will point you in the right direction if he can’t do it but I’d be surprised if he can’t. Talk to Richard directly.
Redfishmatt, I sent you a pm.

Have you tried changing the type of oil you are using? I know these engines are notorious for leaks and using certain synthetics can make the problem worse. From experience rotella 15w40 seems to really help. If I remember correctly you are looking atleast $1500 if the motor comes out.
Tigerfin, Hooligan, thanks for the info, PM responded to.
mooker82, I use what the engine calls for, 5W30. I’ve been warned by folks that own this car not to use anything else. I don’t use synthetic, I use standard. I know using 15W40 would slow down the leak, but these Northstars are designed with lower viscosity oil in mind, and I fear that long-term use of 15w would cause a mess with the bearings.

Back at ya, Matt. Pm replied to.
