Looking for advice

Here’s my setup…i’ve got a 17’ deep vee with a 130hp outboard and no trolling motor. It’s my first boat so i’m trying to figure things out…but i would like to catch fish at the same time(so my wife will see some results if nothing else). My question is…how do i fish the ICW and along the shore line without scaring every fish away within a 3 mile radius with my motor and then putting the anchor down? Or is there not a solution?

Just looking for some help.

Get one of the 10’ anchor pins. That will help immensely and wont break the bank. You can stake out the boat without making a sound instead of splashing and clanking an anchor on the bottom.

Thank you very much! I’ll check it out.

Don?t see you having a problem, you have a boat. Idle into the spot where you want to fish and ease in your anchor. You won?t scare the fish away. Of course this isn?t the best time of year to get the wife into fishing, but if she’s game the fish are there. Think of it this way; if fish ran every time a boat went by they would all die from exhaustion in the ICW.

Exactly what he said, just idle up slow and ease the anchor in, try not to rattle the chain. Don’t really even need chain for shallow inshore fishing. A stake out stick is better in shallow water than an anchor. I’ve seen trolling motors spook more fish than idling outboards do, these fish are used to hearing outboards.

Spooking fish isn’t all that of a bad thing this time of year either. Sometimes that’s the best way to find them.

Dear joshiepoo…Fish are more scared of shadows flitting across the water than outboards and anchor splashes. Ospreys and Eagles are the fisherman they truly fear. With that being said, why would you plow into a fishing spot on plane? Why would you chuck an anchor overboard like a shotput? Of course you wouldn’t. Ease on up, slip the anchor in, and drift back. Easy peasy. The new technology available in trolling motors is quite impressive. I’d love to get one mounted on my boat as a birthday or Christmas gift, but I ain’t holding my breath. Besides…I’m not real thrilled with the look of a big, gangly contraption messing up the lines of my classic Mako. Then there is that whole battery thing. If there is one thing that defies logic and reason on any boat that I’ve owned it’s batteries. Everytime I turn the key when at the ramp, or I’m 5 or more miles from the landing I’m saying an urgent little prayer. I can still catch 'em without one, and pulling up that anchor makes me feel a little bit like an “Old Salt”, and I like that.

Spook em up Charters is what that's called. I've done it.
